I was beginning to get a superstitious fear that my book had gotten consumed in the bowels of the printer and was never going to make it to my doorstep. Anxious moments were gone in an instant when I opened my mail yesterday and found my book, Ladled: Nourishing Soups for All Seasons, bright and beautiful, looking better then even I had imagined and smelling crisp with that “new book” smell that I have always found evocative of new treasures to be found. (That very long, run-on sentence was the only adequate way to express my excitement!)

For me, instead of holding new treasures,  this new book holds my own dear recipes that I had labored so long over. It has been a bit surreal for me! Victory Press did a beautiful job with the book, and I am so happy with it! It is supposed to hit the bookstores and be available online the 18th, if not sooner. I am so glad! Thank you to all of those who have pre-ordered my book and waited long for this book with me. For every time you wondered when it was ever going to come out, I thought of it ten times! (You can read more about Ladled here and here.)

In celebration, I wanted to share 4 recipes from the book, shown in a PDF file, so that you can see how the book is formatted. I love what they did with it!  But first, two other exciting things….

Giveaways!

I have been holding back some big giveaways to share with all of those who pre-order the book! I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but stay tuned for them! I can’t wait to share them. This is just a simple way to say thank you (and to motivate you who are holding out to buy the book once it is released. ;- ) ) Just make sure that if you pre-order the book, you email me your receipt at kimi(dot)harris(at)gmail(dot)com. That way I can add you to the list of all of those who pre-ordered the book and enter you into all of the upcoming giveaways.

Online Soup Workshop!

Plus, my husband and I are working hard to set up a workshop of videos of me teaching some of the recipes from the book (Pho, anyone?) and it is almost done! This is available for FREE for anyone who pre-orders my book (and you will have access to the workshop at least 3 months). For the cost of my book (currently $19.77 on Amazon – a great deal as the book is worth $30), you get not only the book, but free access to my workshop. I may release the workshop later for those willing to pay for it separately, but no promises! And if you buy my book as a gift for someone else, please let me know and send the receipt. I’d love to give you a password access to the workshop to go along with it when you give it as a gift. (Once again, make sure you email your address, so that we can set you up for the class). The class should be set up, starting Monday, if not the weekend.

Recipes

And now, here are the 4 recipes to share from my book. Click on the link to download the PDF file.(By the way, we tried to keep the PDF’s from becoming too big, so these aren’t printer quality PDF’s- the pictures aren’t quite as crystal clear as they are in the book).

Chinese Egg Drop Soup: I adore this simple soup. I kind of had a love/hate relationship with restaurant egg drop soup – it was always too goopy for me. I feel all love towards this recipe. I have a  section devoted to “Simple Soups with Eggs”, this is one of them.

Italian Zucchini and Sausage Soup: This soup is a family favorite. My mother-in-law (whom we miss dearly) made huge pots of this to serve to family and friends. It was always a hit. My sister-in-law shared it with me for this project. It pretty much takes all of the “rules” of soup cooking and throws it out the window with beautiful results. It is incredibly simple to make and so delicious! I have a section in my cookbook sharing family favorite soups from both sides of the family. This is one of the recipes.

Garam Masala Chickpea Soup: This creamy soup is perfect for the sort of cold, dreary weather we are experiencing right now. Rich with coconut milk, spiced with garam masala (a delightful mix of spices) and fresh ginger, and served alone or over rice, this is easily vegetarian or can utilize rich homemade chicken stock. This is from my Hearty Soups and Stew section.

Mexican Cauliflower Soup: And finally, this recipe for creamy soup is actually dairy-less, but gets it creaminess for the pureed vegetables. I love how you can vary the toppings to include a wide variety of things (like cilantro, salsa, corn chips, etc). I find creamed soups especially helpful in getting everyone to eat a lot of vegetables, and we love them so much, I included a whole section of them!

Thanks, everyone for your support! I greatly appreciate it, and I hope you all like my book as much as I do.

Kin, the book (Cooking Companion) is beautifully designed and very inviting. I like that you give some options for substitutes. It came at a wonderful time in the calendar, these rainy, cold, stay-at-home-and-cook=nourishing days. Thank you for some of the recipes.

I did click on the preorder for your new cookbook – “Ladled” so how do I know for sure my order is being processed and will I have the two cookbooks I preordered in time to give as Christmas gifts? Thanks.

I’ve asked the publishers that question too, and they assure me it should be out mid-December. I am assuming they know what they are talking about. 🙂 I suppose there is always the chance of some delay, but it seems like everything is running smoothly now that the books are off the press.

I have preordered your book and am looking forward to it’s arrival. We are having rainy weather and that means soup, for sure. And the workshop and videos are a wonderful bonus. Now I had better get started making some good broth.

I love your fresh cookbook! I am asking for your new book for Christmas!!! In the meantime I am excited to try the recipes that you linked to the post. I have a question; in the Garam Masala Chickpea Soup you call for 1 tbsp of Garam Masala spice mix and makes a reference to another page which we do not have access to. Can you just use a tbsp of garam masala spice? not sure what to add here, but I would like to try this recipe.

    Hi Kim,
I ordered both your books today on amazon and was very excited to find out after I ordered that you are having a workshop for those who preordered! What a nice bonus! My receipt stated that the soup book will be here after Christmas and that’s ok but thought you might want to know for those that need it for gifts. Please let me know how to receive the workshop. This is a present from myself that will benefit my family most of all!
I have been following your site for about 2 years after starting a tradtional diet and I love it.
    Thanks!

Hmmm….I asked the publishing company, and they said that Amazon often “under promises and over deliveries”, but those wanting to make sure they get it quickly once released, probably should do a two day shipping, or something like that.

Just finished making the Italian Sausage & Zucchini soup for the 2nd time in a couple of weeks. Super yummy!! For those interested, a full 8qt pot cost me about $22.48 so assuming 12 bowls from that ~$1.87 per bowl!
