A while back I asked you, my readers, for advice for a friend with a child who was experiencing severe eczema. You all had such helpful advice. Thank you. It was helpful (though slightly overwhelming) to hear the many causes of eczema and it was helpful to realize what a complicated issue it can be. But your success stories in fighting it were encouraging.

Several of you mentioned the hazelwood necklaces from hazalaid.com. Enough of you mentioned it that my curiosity was piqued. So I started reading. I was surprised at the reviews of these products with parents claiming that the necklaces helped their children with skin problems, teething, and other issues. The more I read, the more I realized that maybe I shouldn’t laugh at the idea of a necklace helping eczema (which I admit……I did at first). Since they weren’t expensive, I thought it was worth a try. I mean, it’s a whole LOT easier to wear a necklace than it is to cut out all known allergies to mankind (or so it can feel like when fighting issues like eczema).

I contacted the owner of hazelaid.com and explained that I was interested in trying out her necklaces. She kindly sent some necklaces for my family to try and sent some at cost to a couple of friends as well.

Here is Hazelaid’s back story.

Hazelaid was born when our family was introduced to the amazing healing properties of hazelwood products.  These necklaces, bracelets, and other jewelry made with pieces of wood from the hazelnut tree have the unique property of absorbing the excess acid produced in our bodies when it is in contact with our skin.

We first heard about this jewelry when our third child was very little and was suffering from severe eczema. We had tried many different things to alleviate her symptoms and nothing really seemed to help.  A friend told us about how her son’s severe and painful acid reflux had been dramatically helped by wearing a hazelwood necklace and that it could help with our daughter’s eczema since the root cause of both is often related to excess acidity in the body. We were skeptical but intrigued. We decided we had nothing to lose by giving it a try. Within a couple weeks of wearing the necklace and using the hazelwood zinc oxide ointment, her skin was dramatically improved and she was also spitting up a lot less.  We were amazed! After reading all the testimonials about these wonderful products, we were no longer surprised by our experience…these results seemed to be the norm, and then some!

Hazelwood’s healing property is linked to it’s ability to help make the body alkaline, eliminating acidic caused health conditions, such as eczema. I’ve actually never heard of the connection of an acidic body and eczema before. And I don’t really understand how the hazelwood works, but it does seem to work for many people and that’s the important thing.  When I first told my husband about these necklaces…. (okay, back up. The first time I told him about hazelwood necklaces, we were sharing mirthful comments on the topic)….when I was telling him about the results that many people have using these products my husband’s common sense response was, “It doesn’t cost much to try. It’s much easier than anything else to do. Why not give it a try?” My thought, “If it doesn’t work, you’d still have a cute necklace”.

So, I kept reading. I also noticed that Hazelaid carried another type of necklace made out of baltic amber. This necklace especially interested me. How it works made sense to me.

Baltic amber is not a “stone” but a natural resin. As it warms with the body’s natural temperature, Baltic amber jewelry releases healing oils containing succinic acid which are absorbed into the skin and then into the bloodstream.

Baltic Amber has some of the highest concentrations of succinic acid found in nature, and this is what makes it so special. Succinic acid is a natural component of plant and animal tissues, and its presence in the human body is beneficial in many ways.

Commonly known as “teething jewelry” in Europe, Baltic amber has been a natural remedy for pain relief for hundreds of years.

Amber is also known to reduce inflammation of the throat, ear and stomach and to fight irritation, infections and respiratory disease as it dramatically improves the body’s immunity. Natural amber beaded necklaces are a completely non-invasive remedy for side effects associated with teething, such as lack of appetite, redness in the cheeks, swollen gums, diaper rashes, upset tummies, earache, fevers and colds. Baltic amber is also a natural analgesic that will calm your child and is recognized by allopathic medicine specialists as antispasmodic and anti-fever. Many adults report improvement of arthritis discomfort and carpal tunnel pain in their hands when wearing amber on the wrists. hazelaid.com

I noticed in the testimonial section on their website that the baltic amber necklaces helped some people with headaches, which I was then experiencing. This is also the type of necklace used for teething pain. I noticed in a couple of Amazon reviews that some parents were so enthusiastic that they felt that every baby should have a baltic amber necklace for teething pain!

Who tried the necklaces:

Me: Baltic Amber (for headaches)
Elena (my 4 year old): A mixed baltic amber and hazelwood necklace for general immune boost
Aria (my infant) Baltic Amber for teething
Wes (Nephew): Hazelwood necklace for eczema
Friend’s daughter: Hazelwood necklace for eczema

Me: I started wearing my baltic amber necklace non-stop, only taking it off for a shower. The first week I didn’t have any headaches, but that could have just been chance. I continued to wear it with no headaches. Then one day I had on a scarf and I got a headache. I was talking to my sister and said, “Well, so much for this necklace keeping my headaches away. I am definitely getting one.” I then reached up to to my neck and felt under my scarf…….no necklace. The one day I had gotten a headache, I had forgotten to put my necklace on after my shower!  It happened once again. I thought I had it on, got a headache, and then realized I never put it back on after my shower. I then went through a week or two of very little sleep and got a few mild tired headaches with the necklace on, but they seemed much more mild then normal. Then after all of my recipe testing and feeling better, I stopped getting headaches altogether, and didn’t need to to depend on the necklace helping me. Bottom line: It did help me personally from getting headaches or from having as severe of headaches.

Elena: We got her necklace just as an overall immune booster (and I knew she would love it because it’s cute). She thought that it was very pretty and does love it. I thought that it was neat that she could have a piece of jewelry that could have beneficial properties! Apparently even jewelry can have health benefits.

Aria: I wanted to try the baltic amber necklace for her teething as I noticed a few reviews from parents saying that it not only seemed to help with teething pain, but also with drooling. Aria was drooling massively at the time. She was going through bib after bib all day long. It was ridiculous. So I was hopeful that the necklace would help. In our case, she still drooled when wearing the necklace. It did seem like she wasn’t drooling as much sometimes, but she was still drooling. I also realized that she was the wrong baby to see if it helped with teething pain because she has never really exhibited any signs of teething pain that were obvious. I think that while her drooling was mostly related to teething, she also just likes to drool and seems to purposely drool. So it wasn’t necessarily related to teething or pain in teething. So in her case, I felt like it was too hard to distinguish whether it helped her or not.

Wes: Wes has dealt with eczema on his face for a while now. My sister has been able to pin point several foods that bother him and make it worse. However it was still there. The hazelwood has significantly helped him. It’s pretty exciting! He will still break out if he eats something that bothers him, but most of the time his face looks great! A success for sure.

My friend: Unfortunately my friend who has a daughter with more severe problems didn’t notice anything significant. It is true that not everyone with skin issues respond, most likely, I am told because their root issues are not acidic based. So that could be true for her daughter. She also wasn’t positive that she gave it a long enough trial, but it seems most likely that the hazelwood in her case will not have the results it did for my nephew.

All in all, while obviously not a cure all, we had enough results using these products that I felt I would like to bring them to your attention. Perhaps some of you could be helped by them too! If any of my readers have had experience using these products, I would love to hear your results!

Meanwhile, Hazelaid has kindly agreed to giveaway two gift certificates for $25 dollars. To enter the giveaway, leave a comment below explaining why you would like to try Hazelaid’s products. This giveaway runs until 8/11/11. Winner announced 8/12. The two winners will be picked randomly using random.org

I have a amber necklace for my son and I must say it has worked magic! No more crying and drooling! He’s getting 4 molars and another front tooth in right now so you can imagine the whining that happens without this necklace!!! I’d really like to get a hazelwood necklace for my husband who has eczema on his arms. He’d love it!

I have never heard of hazelwood helping with eczema, but I am interested in trying it out. My 14 yo daughter suffers with eczema so much more since we moved to CT. I think the climate is bad for her and since we have tried everything else I think it is only right to try this too.

My little girl who is about to turn three has suffered from eczema since around 10 months of age. It started out pretty mild and has progressed to just short of a severe problem. But it is chronic and I can’t seem to get it under control. She loves jewelry so this would be perfect for her if her condition is rooted in body acidity issues. Thanks! : )

I would really like to try one of these for my skin condition that the medical community cannot figure out. Their approach has been to prescribe antibiotics and other topical creams–basically treating the symptoms and not addressing the cause. I don’t typically enter these drawing because I don’t think I’ll ever win. However, this is something I am genuinely interested in trying out, so I thought it was worth a shot. :o) Thanks for hosting the drawing! Sharon

All three of my kids, who are in their early 20’s, have major food intolerances/allergies. I am thinking the hazelwood as a bracelet would be especially good for daughter whose fingers are constantly peeling and bleeding with eczema. She has gone to many doctors who didn’t help at all, has tried many creams, many gloves, numerous supplements, and is on a serious anti-candida diet (so adding to no gluten, corn, or dairy, she now doesn’t eat carbs or fruit). Nothing has helped. Other daughter has major corn allergy and son has gluten intolerance with eczema. I would like to try these for all three kids, and spread the word if effective through their blogs.

I’d really love to try this product because I’ve had skin problems on my finger tips for several years and have spent tons of money and energy trying to fix it with diet, creams, etc and it’s getting WORSE! It’s to the point where it’s difficult to do daily tasks. I can’t really afford to purchase a bracelet right now so I’d be extremely grateful to receive one 🙂
