I shared my peanut butter and banana smoothie a while back and one of you mentioned using hazelnut butter. It sounded heavenly. This version pairs chocolate with hazelnut butter, the two important flavors of Nutella. Banana sweetens it, with extra creaminess from whole milk, coconut milk, or milk of choice. It’s now my favorite variation of this nut butter smoothie idea. I love it so well, I thought it deserved it’s own post.

Hazelnut butter is more a specialty item. You can make your own out of soaked or sprouted nuts or I’d recommend buying roasted hazelnut butter. I found Kettle’s Roasted Hazelnut Butter, at my local store, which made it simple. But you can also buy a few brands on my affiliate Amazon, such as Fastachiยฎ Hazelnut Butter or Fresh Roasted Hazelnut Butter. While certainly not the cheapest nut butter, it definitely has a lovely, distinctive flavor.

This has made a lovely snack mid-afternoon. I often have had it not for breakfast, but as a boost for me while working on planning/scheduling/writing.

If your banana isn’t very sweet, or you’d just like it a bit sweeter, add a drizzle of real maple syrup or raw honey. Delicious!

Chocolate Hazelnut Banana Smoothie-Serves 1

1 frozen banana, or a banana and a handful of ice

      2 teaspoons cocoa powder

      2 tablespoons of hazelnut butter

      1/8 teaspoon of vanilla extract

1/2 cup of whole milk, coconut milk, almond milk, or milk of choice (Or 2 tablespoons of coconut cream plus 1/2 cup of water)

Blend thoroughly in a blender. Pour into a glass, and enjoy!

Roast your own hazelnuts, rub the skins off of the outside and grind away in your Vitamix. Easy peasy hazelnut butter. Add a bit of cocoa and honey or powdered sugar and you have nutella!

As I am reading this, I am drinking a smoothie with banana, cocoa powder, and coconut-almond milk. I like to add a little ice to make it almost milkshake-like. It is my favorite snack lately. Sometimes I add peanut butter, too. I haven’t tried hazelnut butter, but I sometimes add hazelnut extract.

Yummy….may I add one more suggestion to further enhance the nurtition with enjoyment: use kefir for the “milk” base. I am on the GAPS diet and doing surprisingly well and slowly overcoming the candida and other toxic creatures in my gut. She emphasisis in her book to culture your own kefir, yogurt, etc and use raw milk whenever possible. Not only is the kefir creamy, loaded with more B vit.s than any other food source, loaded with enzymes for digestion and healthy oils, but the kefir aggressively attacks the destructive bacteria and yeast in our GI tract and replaces it with wonderful probiotics for the next treat. Thanks again for all your wonderful ideas- I love watching to see what you suggest next!

      Hi Lora,

Thanks for the suggestion! I had almost thought of adding that in, however, I was concerned that a sour kefir wouldn’t taste as good in this smoothie. If anyone tries it with success, let us know! Perhaps with a little drizzle of honey it would balance out. ๐Ÿ™‚

I really don’t care for the combo of honey with milk kefir. It doesn’t seem to sweeten it but just gives it a weird taste with the cultured sourness. Maybe it’s just me, but I do like honey in other things. I will add coconut milk with the milk kefir sometimes which makes it less sour. Also adding additional banana works as well. Adding a tablespoon of collagen and a raw egg gives it a real health boost and some extra froth to boot.

I love this recipe. You get the sweetness from fruit, and you get your protein, good fat, all together with great taste.

Wow love it! Keep up the good work. Mine was definitely more of a guacamole color, but yummy nonetheless. I adore smoothies!
