Icy cold chocolate banana pie. How good can it get? When I saw a version of this idea in the Clean Eating Magazine I was flipping through at the grocery store, I knew I had to give it a whirl. With a few changes, it was a dessert that we really enjoyed. The filling it only sweetened with bananas too, which I think is great.
We think that it would be perfect for the heat of summer, both because it’s so refreshing, and because you don’t have to turn on your oven to make it. It’s not as creamy as I was expecting, so don’t expect it to be like an ice cream pie. If you are looking for that (which would be delicious), why not take the crust from below and layer it with roasted banana ice cream and coconut chocolate ice cream? This desert is more light and icy. It was also the perfect project for my 4 year old to help with.
Banana Chocolate Freezer Pie
Adapted from a Clean Eating Magazine Recipe
I made this in an 8 inch springform pan for easy cutting and removal. The original recipe used a normal whole wheat crust in a pie pan. I am pretty sure you could also use my crust in a pie pan. I also think that cream in place of the coconut milk would be great, or even just whole milk.
Crust
1 cup of almonds, (soaked and dehydrated, optional)
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons butter or coconut oil
Pie Filling:
5 bananas
1 cup of full fat coconut milk
½ cup of cocoa powder
1 teaspoons vanilla
1) Toast the almonds in a small saucepan over medium-high heat until browned and fragrant. Place in a food processor with the butter and honey. Blend until finely ground. Push evenly into the bottom of a greased 8 inch springform pan, or pie pan.
2) Rinse out the food processor and add the pie filling ingredients to it. Blend until quite smooth, scraping down the sides as needed. Pour over pie crust and freeze until well set (at least 4 hours).
3) Use a very sharp knife to cut into pieces. Can let sit for about 20 minutes to soften it up a bit. For presentation and added flavor, top with sliced bananas, sliced almonds, or chocolate shavings.

Can’t wait to try it! Frozen bananas are awesome – I use them instead of ice cream as much as possible!

From MN, by any chance? We’re having some record breaking heat and, I agree, this pie may be just what the doctor ordered!

Heidi @ Food Doodles
That looks beautiful, I have to try it! I think I might make a smaller recipe though since my hubby doesn’t like chocolate or bananas 🙁 I love them though, especially together!

This sounds so yummy especially with coconut oil and milk. Hmmm… I’ll try it with finely grated unsweetened coconut as well. Yum Yum. Thanks!

My boyfriend’s Mom picked up the magazine, mainly for this recipe as well. Did you happen to check out any of the others? Some sounded good, but were all trying to be lowfat :-/ Any ideas on revamping the others?
Anna
Yeah! Put down the fork! 😀

This looks too easy! Great idea!

Oh great! I saw this in the magazine too, but didn’t like that it was trying to be low fat. This looks much easier and yummy! need to try this.
Rebecca
*drool* Can you imagine this with peanut butter….?
Muriel
This is just the thing! My mom came home from shopping this morning with about 5 bunches of very over-ripe and speckled bananas. I’m going to try this recipe with the ice cream layer- chocolate coconut milk is my favorite flavor of ice cream.
E.
Hi Kimi- I’m going to make this today with your peanut butter cookie (minus some of the sugar) as the crust. My almonds are running low, and I think the peanut butter will be divine with the banana and chocolate! 🙂 Yum!

So delicious. I had made it within 15 minutes of my mom emailing me the link, luckily i had the ingredients on hand. My fiance doesn’t tolerate almonds, so we made the crust with shredded coconut instead…..delicious!

Looks delicious! How many servings does this make?

Your pie looks sensational. I’ve definitely got to learn how to make chocolate curls like you do. I have a sweet treat linky party going on at my blog and I’d love it if you’d come by and link your pie up. http://sweet-as-sugar-cookies.blogspot.com/2011/06/sweets-for-saturday-21.html

I am going to try this. I think I will add a bit of stevia ( I like things sweet) and use some gelatin to thicken the filling. Awesome!!
KimiHarris
Jamie, It’s pretty sweet with just the bananas, as long as you use ripe ones (but by all means further sweeten if you like!). Because the mixture is frozen, it doesn’t need to be thickened, however the gelatin might improve the texture (preventing some of the ice crystals to form). Let me know if you try it!
Jamie
Oh cool :). I’ll skip the stevia, but still try the gelatine. Thanks!
Susan
This looks great!! I’m going to try using the filling recipes for popsicles. 😀
Lisa
Made 3 pies for my daughter’s first birthday & they were incredible. I soaked and dried the nuts (used a combo of almonds, pecans, and walnuts). Didn’t toast/brown the nuts. Also, put strawberries on top. One of my pies was like pudding since I had to stack 2 of them. Another was like ice cream. Equally enjoyed. Thanks for a great recipe!
Rebeca
I made the filling as popsicles and they were great. Used Nancy’s cream cheese instead of the coconut milk since I had some that needed to be used, but next time will do coconut. Everyone loved them! Will have to make it as a pie sometime too. Thanks… we love your recipes!
Lori
Do you think I could add a few egg yokes to the filling to make it creamier and give another boost of nutrition? I’m always trying to squeeze some extra protein and good fat into my husbands diet. Maybe some peanut butter too? Hm… I like the idea that someone had to make it into popsicles. I’ll probably use cream or raw whole milk cause I can never find good coconut milk and my husband doesn’t care for coconut flavor anyway.
KimiHarris
Lori,
I bet that a few egg yolks would definitely be a good addition. And peanut butter would be yummy, I think too. Let me know if you try it. (I am sure this is just as good with cream as it is with coconut milk. :- ) )

This recipe looks heavenly — without all of the sugary ingredients! Can’t wait to make this pie! Thanks for sharing.

Okay Gals,
I found this reicpe to have too much cocoa, it was bitter tasting for my liking. Personal preference. I did add some stevia – comment from another post. This did cut the bitter chocolate taste a bit. Sorry, not one of my favorites.
Louise
I love this recipe! I made it with homemade yogurt. Had to leave it set in the refrigerator for a while before I cut it, it was SOLID! My picky husband even loved it!
Jessica
Nice recipe! I was hankering for something sweet tonight, and quickly whipped up a batch of just the filling. Refrigerated it and had chocolate pudding in a few minutes. Yum!

My mom made two of these for my birthday this past weekend and they were SO GOOD. I haven’t eaten anything sweet in months and months, and these were just perfect. Glad she made two so the husband and I can eat the second one this week! Thanks so much for posting!
Kristina
O yum!! I just found your blog on pinterest and I’m so happy I did! I need to give this pie a try asap! I only have low fat coconut milk in my pantry, can I use it instead of the full fat? Thanks!
KimiHarris
Kristina,
Welcome! The only concern I have with the low-fat, is that it would become too “icy”. This dessert is definitely already on the icy side, and if you took out more fat, it could definitely become even more icy.
Erin
This dessert looks amazing! I know it’s supposed to be a chocoate “bananna” freezer pie….but do you have any suggestions of what might work well in place of the banannas? :o) I just can’t get myself to like them! :o)
Kristen
Just popped it in the freezer. Planning on taking it to a fourth or July BBQ. Everyone is allergic to something at the BBQ so this will be perfect!
KimiHarris
Hope it works well for you! We really enjoy this dessert. 🙂
