Pennywise Platter Thursday 1/4/10

As usual last week we had so many great entries in our Pennywise Platter Carnival that it’s really hard to choose which ones to highlight! One that really stuck out to me was Lindsey’s Chocolate Dipped Candied Orange Peels. . I love how the recipe uses a food item that would normally be thrown away, orange peels, and turns it into a delicious treat! And at Fresh and Feisty, a great dairy free creamy tomato soup was posted. Yummy!

What frugal and nourishing tips and recipes do you have for us today? Last week’s carnival was stuffed full of great recipes. Wow! I loved Wardeh’s post on making homemade beef jerky using ground beef (so cheap) and I loved Sarah’s recipe for sourdough crepes using starter without a soaking time period. So quick and fast (and cheap too).

I can’t wait to see what everyone has this week!

If you would like to participate, please link back to this post , and then come leave a link to your post here. Make sure you link to your specific post for the carnival, not just your blog. Some of you were having a hard time knowing how to fill out the Mr. Linky form. So here is an example.

Welcome back to another round of Pennywise Platter Thursday! I’ve decided go back to my old habit of highlighting a post from last week from one of you. I love being able to highlight one of your great posts one more time (even if it is hard to choose one to share). Today I wanted to highlight ElizabethG’s Moroccan Chicken Stew. The reason? It made my mouth water! And it seems like a simple recipe too.

What do you have for us this week? For those new to the carnival, this carnival is dedicated to sharing tips and recipes on how we make nourishing food work on a budget. In other words, how to eat quality food for less. Use the Mr. Linky below to link to your post on the subject, just make sure to link back to this post and keep things family friendly.

Simple and Nourishing Carnival

People in the past knew how to feast…..and how to enjoy a simple dinner.

Holiday feasts weren’t the casual throw-together meals that we generally create. But their everyday meals were often kept quite simple, unlike our weekdays meals which can be time consuming.

I don’t want to over-generalize. All you need to do is pick up Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls and read the descriptions of his meals and you will know that many a farmer had bigger meals then we could ever imagine! (and there was a farmer’s wife who made it all too). But still, there are many literary illusions to simple meals of the past that have always appealed to me.

For example, in Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell, set in the eighteen hundreds, Molly toasts bread and cheese for a rustic dinner together with her Father. A dinner her more refined step mother sticks her nose up at.
