family picture(Joel’s Grandma is in the middle in white, Sono is on the right of her. Joel, Elena and I are on the far left hand side)

Life is such a mix of sorrow and happiness, aging and new birth, vibrant health and illness.  In our lives right now we are experiencing that in a personal way. I am 18 weeks pregnant. A little (already kicking strong) life is growing and developing inside of me. We have been rejoicing in this new life and praying for this new baby and my pregnancy as I have had complications before in the past. I have also been pretty much bed ridden the last several months from bad morning sickness. (And if you hadn’t put two and two together yet, that’s why my blogging lately has been so sporadic! I didn’t know how many “buttered toast” recipes I could post on a cooking blog!)

But in the midst of my pregnancy, we found out several weeks ago that my dear mother-in-law, Sono, has stage four colon cancer. This is my “friend” who I was researching juicers for. While we have been trying to nourish with good food and pray for our little baby, we have also been trying to heal and praying for my mother-in-law’s life. We want our little baby to get the chance to meet her grandma and grow up knowing her.

She decided against going the conventional route (which could give her little hope at this point of a 100% recovery) and went the alternative health route. But it’s an aggressive cancer and is definitely holding it’s own. Last week she had a down turn, but she has since then started a new treatment which seems to have shown good results already. We are thankful for every day we have with her and thankful that this new treatment is giving us extra days and hope that it will continue to heal her so that she can have many, many days on this earth enjoying her children and her grandchildren.

We appreciate your thoughts and prayers for both my pregnancy and for Sono.

Meanwhile, I have started feeling better enough to start cooking again, and you will definitely see more recipes here at the Nourishing Gourmet. Because of Sono’s recent downturn, we decided to wait until next week to announce the full story of my ecourse (which will be starting at the end of this month) to give us a few extra days to finish up our to-do-list for it. I am really excited about the ecourse and feel like it’s going to be a great resource for my readers and a lot of fun to teach as well.

I am thankful for the continued support of my blog from all of you, my readers, and for the many friendships that have grown through my blog. Thank you!

Congratulations on the pregnancy and I’m sorry to hear the news of your mother in law. I know how hard it is. My mother was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer at the age of 50. It was the summer before I was to start college. She survived 5 years! She did have surgery several times to cut out tumors and did some chemo and radiation as well. But she was an incredibly strong woman and she chose to take a course of aggressive treatment to survive as long as she could for her seven children. Anything is possible.

Congratulations for baby! I too have horrible morning sickness when pregnant (and my husband doesn’t believe me when I want to have another because of it). My homeopathic doctor gave me “sepia” to help with the morning sickness. Worked great. I also found that I was allergic to anything soy (including lethicin in store-bought bread and soy sauce). However, I could have raw dairy (which I am normally allergic too except when pregnant or breast feeding). Omitting soy, adding dairy and taking sepia was a life saver with my 2nd pregnancy. Good luck.

I will pray for your mother-in-law. Sickness can be very taxing on anyone and their loved ones.

Congrats on the new baby and I am so sorry to hear about your mother-in-law. I pray you can have rich/joyful moments with her in the time that remains.

I would love to hear how you manage nutritional eating during morning sickness. I was recently pregnant (miscarried at 8 weeks) and was horribly sick for the first 4 weeks. This was my first pregnancy and I was bulldozed by the morning sickness. I never really vomited but I felt like I was on the verge all day long. It was exhausting. I wanted to eat healthy but not much was appetizing. I ended up eating a lot of Cheerios, fresh fruit, and hamburgers!

Before I get pregnant again I’d like to arm myself with all that I can to manage the morning sickness!

I am sorry about your mother-in-law. I do not know if you have heard of it, but I have read somewhere (probably on a sweedish Low Carb doctors website) that omitting karbohydrates from the diet combined with high doses of vitamin C can shrink tumors. I think the research is still ongoing, but it might be worth giving it a try. Just be careful to eat enough fats if you try this aproach. Hoping you all will be well.

    Hi Kimi,

    Congratulations on your new baby!

And I will definitely be praying for Sono.

Goodness, I sort of hate to offer anything other than that, since I know that everyone will be offering advice now that you have explained that Sono has cancer. However, I noticed above that someone above suggested Doug Kaufmann’s website, and I would echo that. We have a friend who is an Osteopath (nuclear medicine). Professionally, he is required to be “western” in his approach. On his own, and thanks to research he did in Italy, he knows how to kill cancer using baking soda! It is really quite amazing, but the fungal theory is the key to understanding his approach. (For the record, the theory doesn’t say that all cancers are fungal, only that many of them are.)

In addition to that, we have a wonderful alternative practitioner here in CA who has done wondrous things with cancer patients. I cannot say more because she has to be careful about what she says due to state laws, but if you are ever interested, you can contact me via email.

    Praying for your family…

I will be praying for you and your family. I am also expecting as well- 14 weeks here so congratulations! We lost our last daughter 6 months gestation so this pregnancy is also bringing lots of fear with it for me. But I will trust in the Lord. I will also be praying for Sono as well. Please tell her that people are praying !

    Kimi,

Reading the other comments made me think of an alternative treatment that my functional medicine doctor had recommended for my FIL when he had lung cancer. (He would not consider an alternative treatment though.) It’s Essiac tea. http://www.essiac-tea-herbal-remedies.com/herbalremedy.html Note that this herbal tea developed from a Native American recipe is routinely dismissed by traditional doctors and I have no experience or affiliation with it, but wanted to pass along the info. My own father is now dealing with a recurrence of prostate cancer. I would love it if he’d try this, but he’s traditional all the way and only listens to his traditional doctors, even though his cancer returned following their plan.

Again, all the best to your MIL and family,
    Shirley

Have you ever heard of Dr. Simincini? He is an oncologist in Europe who has a 90% cure rate with cancer of all kinds. He believes that cancer is a fungus, and uses plain old baking soda to get rid of it. You can’t argue with 90%! My good friend Gregory flew to Italy to consult with him and was sent home with a catheter treatment that he could do himself at home to treat his stage 4 prostate cancer. That was 9 months ago, and he is now completely healed. His doctors are amazed that the tumor and lymph nodes are all cancer free. Praise God! see http://www.cancerisafungus.com for more info!

    Congratulations on your pregnancy!

And we’re definitely praying for Sono and your family, I don’t know whether it will help but Dr Ben Kim’s site has recently addressed cancer and given some dietary tips? http://drbenkim.com/what-to-do-about-cancer.htm

The recent TED talks mentioned by tricia are really useful; the gist of it is that angiogenesis (the growth of new blood vessels) plays a large role in the growth of tumours and can be inhibited by eating certain foods more info can be found here; http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2010/02/blood-vessels-key-to-cancer/ (it also lists dietary sources of naturally occurring angiogenic substances in a handy slide)

I hope this helps somehow 🙂
