The above beautiful gnarled trees host plump olives and are grown on mineral-rich soil and raised non-toxically on a family owned farm, Chaffin Family Orchards. These better-than-organic olives are cold-pressed into a buttery, mild olive oil (or a spicy, flavorful olive oil, depending in which kind you order). And one person is going to win two whole gallons of this beautiful stuff!

And there are no worries about olive oil adulterated here (a far too common problem in our world, just read this to give you an idea). This olive oil is just pure flavor and quality. Chaffin Family Orchards is doing a pre-season sale. This is a great opportunity to both save money and support a small farmer that is doing excellent work.

This is another giveaway as part of the pre-order promotion of my new cookbook, Ladled: Nourishing Soups for All Seasons (By the way, sorry about the delay in the release of my cookbook! It is almost done printing and should be shipping ASAP to Amazon and other venues!). You can read the index of the cookbook and general information here.  and  Everyone who has 1) Pre-ordered at least one soup cookbook and 2) Emailed me their amazon receipt gets an entry. (Email: kimi(dot)harris(at)gmail(dot)com. This giveaway, unfortunately, is only open to those in the U.S. This giveaway is closed at Midnight, the 25th, and the winner will be announced and emailed on the 26th.

(Chaffin Farms has their goats help prune the trees and fertilize the soil!)

Six Reasons you should buy this olive oil

1. It’s a frugal choice

There are a wide variety of prices for olive oil – anywhere from 25-35 cents per ounce for (generally) low-quality olive oil, to over a dollar an ounce for some of the “estate” olive oils. Chaffin Orchards is only about 46 cents an ounce when ordering a 2-gallon pre-order. This is a great deal for such an excellent olive oil. But, if you wanted to save even more, you could set up a couple of friends to buy with you and buy ten gallons for $50 dollars each, which is only approximately 39 cents an ounce, a excellent price (and, yes, it includes the price of shipping!). Pre-ordering helps small farms survive during the times when they are not harvesting too!

2. You support an endangered variety of olives

These olives (and the olive oil they make) are not only delicious (and therefore worth saving), but Slow Food USA has placed this variety of olives in their “Ark of Taste” as they are variety unique to the US that had almost died out until recent years. Chaffin Orchards is listed as a source of this wonderful olive oil.

3. You buy American produced olive oil

So much of our olive oil is imported from other countries. I think it is wonderful to support American family farms. This olive oil is one great option for doing just that.

4. Their late season olive oil is extremely mild

Their late season olive oil is the most mild I have ever tasted, which makes it perfect for those who would like to make olive oil based mayonnaise, use it as a substitute for butter in dishes like mashed potatoes, or simply enjoy the mild taste in salad dressings, pestos, and drizzled over a bowl of soup. It is also excellent for children and those weaning themselves off of rancid, omega-6 rich vegetable oils. Their mid-season is more “spicy” with a lot of flavor and higher antioxidant levels (or so I understand from some of my readers). It is also excellent.

5. Perhaps more nutrient-dense than other olive oils

Because Chaffin farms does such an excellent job taking care of the soil the olive trees grow in, their olive oil could have higher amounts of certain nutrients. Research has shown that soil quality does make a difference in nutrient levels in produce. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if their olive oil is higher in certain nutrients.

6. You get to enjoy the fruit of “old growth” olive oil

Chaffin Farm’s trees are all quite old, which is why their olives are so delicious. Another Californian olive oil producer discussed with me the importance of older orchards in producing the best olives. I laughed to myself when I realized that he was trying to sell me his olive oil with this selling point of “old growth” when I was buying from Chaffin’s orchards whose trees were significantly older.

These are all excellent reasons to buy from Chaffin’s. You can go here to pre-order your own. You can also, follow Chaffin Family Orchards on Twitter and Facebook.  And don’t forget to pre-order my cookbook for a chance to win 2 gallons of this beautiful olive oil!

I know! I love that they give ten dollars of a gallon for only ten gallons. With 4 friends willing to buy two gallons, it is fairly easy to fulfill!

      Hey Julie,

Yes, this giveaway is a little different than usual. I am running these giveaways to both thank those who pre-order my book, as well as encourage everyone to pre-order it as it helps my book be successful long-term.

So excited about this giveaway! The Chaffin Family Orchard’s website is full of interesting information. I would love to try their grass-fed beef. Living in Iowa, I only ever hear that grass-fed beef is very tough and no farmer I personally know will raise them that way. We actually had a discussion about this very subject last night before Bible study (farmers in our group). They think I am rather odd for wanting grass-fed beef. We live on a farm, but the land is rented out, and we don’t have animals. We have the buildings for it though, as my husband’s family had a chicken hatchery. He is a tough one to convince about the grass-fed beef, too. Maybe someday…. 🙂

I emailed you two Amazon book receipts, Kimi. Thank you!

Where do you live in Iowa Corinne? I am originally from Waterloo. My Mom seems to think that all cows are raised on grass there, but I was thinking that is not so. So, am I correct? Do most farmers not raise them on grass in Iowa? Thanks for the clarification!
