We all know that we should be eating and drinking more probiotic foods, right? Yogurt, kefir, kombucha, water kefir, and buttermilk all contain important enzymes and healthy bacteria. And what about sourdough? If you were following my phytic acid research, you know that sourdough not only tastes delicious but is one of the best ways to reduce anti-nutrients in grains.

While you can sometimes buy high quality products in the stores, they are generally very expensive or have additives and other ingredients best avoided. Making your own insures a high quality product and you save a lot of money too! You make a gallon of homemade yogurt for the price of a gallon of milk! Kombucha just costs pennies per serving, and kefir and buttermilk is cheaper as well as high quality when homemade. I personally love making my own sourdough bread. It agrees with my tummy, saves us a lot of money by making our own, and it good for us too!

I’ve used many of the cultures from Cultures from Health and have always been impressed with the customer service as well as the high quality of the starters. Today, Cultures for Health is giving away five starters of your choiceΒ  to one lucky winner! Cultures for Health traded a dehydrator for advertising on my site and I suggested that we offer this giveaway. I am very happy that one of my readers get’s such a great culture starter pack!!!!

Lets take a look at your options.

Yogurt Starters

Cultures for Health carry a wide variety of yogurt starters. The great thing about these starters is that as long as you keep them alive, you never have to buy a yogurt starter again! Along with selling starters suitable to use in yogurt makers, they also sell yogurts that ferment at room temperature! They are super easy to get started and keep going.

Kombucha Mothers

I love this tangy, flavorful drink. Rich in enzymes and probiotics, it’s a great addition to your diet as well. Once you have the mother, it’s very frugal and cheap to make your own (buying them at the store is so expensive!).

Sourdough Starters

Cultures for Health carries a wide variety of sourdough starters. Sourdough starters include white flour, whole wheat, spelt, brown rice, kamut, and rye starters. Buy (or choose if you win!) the starter using the type of flour you plan on using with your sourdough. That way you don’t have to get your sourdough starter adjusted to a new flour. I currently have the whole wheat starter and love it! It’s work very well for me with an excellent rise time.

Buttermilk

Or start making your own buttermilk! I had no idea that it was so easy. Just add some starter and let ferment at room temperature until done. “Our buttermilk starter creates a traditional cultured buttermilk which is rich in nutritional value including enzymes, potassium, vitamin B12, riboflavin and calcium; allowing you to make buttermilk without the additives and stabilizers common in commercially available varieties of buttermilk. One packet of starter culture can be used to make unlimited amounts of buttermilk as it can be serial cultured–a small amount of buttermilk from the current batch is then reserved to inoculate the next batch of homemade buttermilk. With care, our buttermilk culture can be used to make homemade buttermilk indefinitely. No more having to continually buy buttermilk! ”

Kefir

Kefir is a wonderful food! Whether you make creamy homemade dairy kefir or sparkly water kefir, you will be making another great probiotic food!

Do you know if kefir and kombucha would help with Crohn’s? Have been trying to find dietary information and most sites say that diet is not that big of a factor in Crohn’s. Thanks.

I signed up also and I think it is a great giveaway! My daughter has autism so we have been using cultured foods with great success. We haven’t used it as much in the summer here but it is vital that she has probiotics moving through her of some kind. I would be anxious to see how the kombucha would work for her. So far we have tried yogurt, kefir and sauerkraut. All are good, especially raw sauerkraut although her favorite is the raw milk yogurt! Thanks for this cool giveaway!

I would love to have these starters. I have been making sourdough bread for 35 years now, but my daughter and I have recently found out we’re gluten intolerant. I would like to try some flours other than wheat to see if we feel better using them. I think I’m probably getting some cross contamination somewhere with the wheat.

It’s great to have the starters to get started so thanks for doing this but for those who don’t win, you can always make lacto-fermented vegetables. All you need is some salt. Works great and you get the probiotics you seek. They’re all good.
