Along with chocolate, roses and jewelry, perfume is one of the most romantic gifts you can buy. My dad often buys my mother perfume for Christmas, which she has always loved. What woman doesn’t enjoy having a sweet scent to spray on? Many women even say that they feel better about themselves, and are more productive when wearing perfume!
But sadly, my husband and I have been unable to keep the perfume gift tradition going because, quite frankly, I was too concerned about the chemicals in perfume to enjoy it. Perfumes are rarely naturally produced, but made with chemicals and synthetic fragrances now.
One such chemical group, phthalates, is used in perfume to help it linger. It’s not listed on the label of perfumes and was even found in perfumes that claimed to be phthalate free. Because of the concerns over phthalates, many of them have been banned by the European Union, but are still found in the US.
Even more troubling, synthetic fragrances are staying around much longer than they should. We are experiencing build ups in lakes and it’s showing up in our fat and in our breast milk.
Joanna from Actual Organics had this to add about this issue.
According to Dr Paula Baillie Hamilton our body doesn’t recognise the chemicals and so it stores it in a fat cell.
Dr Paula Baillie-Hamilton has even written a book called the Detox Diet which talks about the most toxic products and foods. The rule of thumb is anything that is synthetic. The fake foods, or fake fragrances and synthetic chemicals. These the body doesn’t know how to process and so sees it as a threat and wraps it up for later, sadly if we expose the body to new synthetic chemicals on a daily basis the problem gets worse.
So when we bath or shower, use deodorant or apply lotion we have to be aware of what we are using on our skin. Some chemicals such as phthalates are endocrine disruptors and they can affect our fertility, increase the risk of breast cancer and are said to even affect the actual formation of child sexual organs’ development. This brief article from the World Health Organisation about endocrine disruptors.
So I haven’t been too keen on wearing perfumes, especially on a weekly basis.
That’s why I was so excited about this giveaway! Here is a perfume that has pure ingredients, scented only with organic essential oils, resins, twigs and bark. Finally, a perfume you can use without guilt on a daily basis.
So this Valentine’s Day, if you want perfume as a gift, send your sweetheart a link to this lovely perfume, instead of settling for synthetic. And if you don’t win, use the coupon code, “cupid” to get 20% off a full size bottle of perfume!
And today Joanna, an independent rep for Miessence, from Actual Organics is giving away their perfume sampler pack! This is worth seventy dollars and has all six of their scents, so it’s perfect for deciding which scent you like best. . I have been eyeballing their perfumes (and their spa quality facial care) for the last few months with longing, so I am thrilled to be giving away this most coveted item. I will give a more personal review of the product when I receive my own samples next week, but meanwhile here are Joanna’s descriptions.

I haven’t worn perfume for years because I can’t stand the synthetic oils, production, and mostly the toxic and overpowering smells of commercial perfumes 🙁 I typically just mix my own oils and dab them on lightly but I would love to smell something new, especially because these products seem sustainable. Thanks for the opportunity!
