It’s time to share your frugal and nourishing tips and recipes! Where do you shop for quality food at a lower price? What recipe saves a penny? How do you balance a budget with nourishing food? Share here.

Please read through the three simple rules for those participating. This helps keep the quality of our carnival. Please read them through before linking and thanks again for your continued participation.

1) No linking to giveaways or promotions for affiliates or sponsors. One thing that I’ve noticed increasingly on Pennywise Platter is that I am getting more and more promotional pieces for affiliates or sponsors and a lot of giveaways. I’ve decided to keep Pennywise less “commercial” and more in tune with the spirit of the carnival by not allowing these links anymore. There was nothing wrong with those of you who linked to them, I just think that it will protect the integrity of our carnival better without them. Plus, it makes our links valuable in the future as well. A link to a giveaway three months old isn’t going to be worth browsing in three months time, but a link to a recipe for a frugal soup would be. I will be deleting any giveaway links or promotional links.

2) Keep the ingredients “nourishing”, such as whole grains, meats, vegetables, legumes, unrefined salt and sugars, chicken, etc. I am not going to be an ingredient police every week, but if there is a link to a post that is obviously not filling any of the criteria for healthy (for example, a white flour, white sugar birthday cake), I will delete that link. However, feel free to post vegetarian, vegan, raw, low-carb, etc.

3) Link back to the carnival This is common carnival courtesy. And more then that, it helps build the community of the carnival as you are sending your readers to others participating. And please, as a blogger, check out other’s posts and leave a comment! I know that we would all love to hear from each other.

I saw that you had fried apples listed in your Ode to Fall Foods. They’re a favorite of mine, and we eat them often because we have such a beautiful apple tree in the back yard (just had the apple harvesting party tonight!). I prefer to have apples fried with onion and sage. But every once in a while, I crave fried apples made with a maple cream caramel sauce. I’m sharing recipes for both.

    Thank you for hosting 🙂

Today I have shared my Chicken and Wild Rice Soup! It is a frugal and nourishing dish that is so comforting on rainy days. I also shared a recent post on winter gardening……I know it isn’t a recipe, but it is a definite budget helper for my real food kitchen. Enjoy!

This is a simple, nourishing recipe, that only takes 6 ingredients. One the whole family enjoyed….and that’s saying a lot!

Thanks for hosting, Kimi, and happy fall to everyone….

I’m raising my hand, too…of course I’m loving fall!! It’s one of my favorite times of year – along with the food that goes with it.

Thanks so much for hosting, Kimi! I love your Ode to Fall…and the flavors you have there represent the season so well. Plum, cinnamon, maple, kale, carrots. You said it perfectly.

I ask and answer the simple question about whether or not sugar snap peas are primal or paleo. I eat this type of “diet” but eat them myself and if you have no problems then there is no reason why you can’t do the same!

Soup is often disliked by young kids, I’m sharing the two step strategy I used to get both my boys eating every soup recipe i made by age 4. Also included is a roundup of soup, chili, stew recipes that are all frugal by use of homemade chicken stock and leftover protein/vege.

Hello, all! I’m sharing how my family and I went hunting for premium wild mushrooms, chanterelles. They cost $15 per pound around here! We had a great time and I was able to freeze a bunch to eat later in the winter.

I was just wondering how you feel about the google ad on your website right now being for the Sugar Factory “Halloween Treats”? Isn’t that almost the antithesis to “nourishing” and “gourmet”?

      Lisa,

I can block any google ads I want, however most are on for a very short amount of time, like the one you mentioned so I never saw it. Google ads allow me to make some money off of my site without having any ties to any companies. A position I think serves my readers well, though few readers realize this advantage. I have some trust in my readers that seeing a ad for candy isn’t going to ruin everything that I stand for here. However, I will most likely be soon changing back to private advertisers. This complicates my job certainly, but does give me more control.

I found some cream that was set aside for ice cream had gone sour. Thus the squash faux-tatoes recipe I share. Not all of it went with the squash though, some went into my butter pecan ice cream – the soured cream gave that wonderful butter flavor perfectly. Mmmmm!

Hi Kimi. This week I made a version of my famous banana cake. This time it is grain free (using coconut flour only), and has no dairy or refined sugars. It’s perfect for those who are Primal/Paleo or gluten free!
