It looks like we are going going to have quite the group doing the Sugar Free Challenge next week! It would be great to hear some advice from you all on how to go sugar free without breaking the budget this week and next. I am sure everybody who is part of the challenge would love it!

As usual, it is very difficult to pick which post from last weeks carnival to feature this week. They were also so good! If you haven’t already, check them out.

I am forcing myself to just choose two. Jenny from A Nourished Kitchen shared a great post about stretching a chicken into five meals. I do the same thing, and it really stretches your budget! Great advice. Thanks, Jenny!

Secondly, Melodie at Breastfeeding Mothers Unite! shared a great post about picking free fruit. Also great advice. Thanks Melodie!

It’s advice like this that helps us keep our budgets down while eating nourishing, whole food.

What do you have for us this week?

You know the ropes. For guidelines go here and please format your entry in the comment section like the following and remember to link back to this post. Thanks!

Kimi @ The Nourishing Gourmet Five Healthy and Frugal Meals (https://www.thenourishinggourmet.com/2009/07/five-frugal-and-healthy-meals.html) Today I share five meals that are healthy, easy and frugal. They also happen to be family standby’s so you know they’ve been “family approved”. Check them out!

Pennywise Platter 10/1

Kimi @ The Nourishing Gourmet

I share about my frugal “cracker” party for Elena, with a delicious recipe for both spelt crackers and spelt rosemary. Yummy.

Amanda @ Rebuild from Depression Save bucks on food: Five quick tips…

Just about everyone I know has been affected by the economy enough to watch their food budget. With that in mind, I have three quick tips to pass on to frugal meal planners. (1) Join a food co-op or……

Katie @ Kitchen Stewerdship A seriously yummy meatless recipe, my veggie bean burritos can feed a huge crowd for about $5. (Also lots of bean recipes linking up today for an October Fest Carnival of Super Foods.)

Shannon @ Nourishing Days

Here is a recipe for Grain-Free Tabouli Salad which includes crispy nuts and seeds instead of bulgur wheat. It is low-carb, GFCF, and makes a great frugal lunch.

Emily @ Life in Cincinnati Dairy-Free Hot Chocolate

Here’s a recipe for homemade hot cocoa using coconut milk. It also makes a delicious cold chocolate milk!

Jen @ A Heavenly Perspective

another refried beans recipe – a little spicy!

> Real, Delicious Food On a Real Budget

read about my goal to economize our food budget while still eating real food and supporting local food!

Sheri @ Moms For Safe Food

Today’s recipe is our favorite homemade naan bread. We do soak our whole grains before cooking but I have not been able to figure out how to adjust a recipe to soak the flour. Advice appreciated, Kimi! 🙂

Wardeh @ GNOWFGLINS – Cinnamon-Raisin Swirl Bread

This was a big hit with all of us! This technique can be done with savory flavorings, too, such as herbs and/or cheese. I have a hankering to do a feta, olive and oregano loaf. Making a swirl bread is very easy to do, and it is a frugal, healthy, homemade option to purchasing gourmet breads.

MDT@ True Adventures in Money Hacking Mexican-style Veggie Burgers:

Delicious nutritious easy and cheap! Homemade black bean and lentil burgers with a hint of heat that can be prepared in bulk and frozen for quick preparation on lazy days.

MDT @ True Life Adventures in Money Hacking Indian-Style Yellow Split-Pea (Toor Daal) and Brown Lentil Burgers:
Spicy and delicious, these are a departure from your average veggie burger with their tantalizing combination of indian spices. Like the Mexican version above, they’re extremely economical and easy to prepare.

Shelley @ Make a Home Mom

My soaked pasta noodle recipe- super easy and frugal. Made in a food processor- yes, I am that lazy!

Kara @ Home with Purpose

Good Old Fashioned Pinto Beans in the crockpot by my husband are the best!

Christina@A Walk In My Garden – Roasted Vegetables made into a Meal Inspired by what I found at Farmers Market this week, a filling vegetarian lunch or light dinner idea.

Anali

A deliciously different quinoa salad that can work with a no sugar diet(As far as I know)

Ren @ Edible Aria Roasted Tomato and White Bean Soup with Tasso Ham

Here’s a super-nourishing and frugal dish that doesn’t skimp on flavor! Roasted San Marzano tomatoes, yellow onions, garlic and peppers with spicy Tasso ham, celery, fresh herbs and raw olive oil..

Amanda @ Coping with Frugality

I made Roasted Tomato and Garlic Soup this week with tomatoes from the garden and it was just wonderful!! Check it out:

A Modern Gal

I enjoyed the sweet potato black bean chili combination so much, I tweaked it a bit and came up with the wonderful sweet/savory combination for enchiladas:

Sweet potato black bean enchiladas

Sheri, I heard that soaking grains is only effective if you then eat them raw. As far as I know, cooking nullifies the effects of soaking.

        Wren,

Where did you hear that? I don’t think that’s true!

          Wren,

On second thought, I bet what you heard was that you lose the enzymes when you cook (enzymes that are released in the soaking/sprouting process), but what you gain from soaking, even when you cook them, is neutralizing the phytic acid, which prevents you from absorbing important nutrients. So soaking is still important even when you are cooking grains, 🙂

Sheri – I didn’t see where to leave a comment on your site, so I’m commenting here to tell you that your naan bread looks amazing! I’d probably try it with sprouted spelt or maybe a sourdough. I may be trying it soon ~ thanks for sharing your recipe!
