Japanese Style Avocado

March 17, 2009 by KimiHarris 41 Comments

Slice rich, soft, nutrient rich avocados. Then drizzle olive oil, soy sauce, and toasted sesame oil over it. This simple sauce make your sliced avocado a real treat. It’s one of our favorite snacks here! My two year old included.

My husband taught me how to put this simple snack together as it was a favorite family treat of his family’s growing up. I love that not only is it delicious, but it’s a very nutrient rich snack as well.

Protect Your Freedom to Eat Nourishing Food and Support Small Farmers (Against HR 875)

Let me be clear about one thing, I hate politics. I really truly do. And I certainly don’t plan to talk about politics a lot here at The Nourishing Gourmet. However, when laws are being attempted to be passed that could directly affect what I can cook in my kitchen, it’s time to stand up and say something about it.

I will be giving some links discussing some bills that are in the Senate and house right now ( H.R. 814, S.R. 425 and H.B. 759, H.R. 875 are all bills that are really concerning, many of the articles I link to have to do with HR 875)) that have the potential to negatively effect small farmers and businesses and the freedom we have enjoyed in our country.  But I wanted to explain a little bit why I think supporting local, small time farmers is so important.

You see, to be passionate about eating nourishing foods means that you will be passionate about supporting local farmers, because local farmers who see their customers face to face are going to care a lot more about giving quality products. Customers who see the weather-beaten faces and calloused hands of their local farmers (such as many of the farmers I buy from) are going to be much more willing to give fair prices to the farmers who feed them. It’s a win win solution to the dirty practices of big time food producers who only care about producing cheap food (sold to people whose only consideration is buying cheap food).

Rustic Irish Soda Bread (Dairy Free)

March 13, 2009 by KimiHarris 16 Comments

ng_irishsodabreadRustic soda bread, hot and fragrant, crunchy on the outside- soft on the inside, simple goodness-like a rustic scone- and just in time for Saint Patrick’s Day.

This is a dairy free, soaked recipe very similar to the buttermilk version I made here. This version also contains oatmeal for a lovely addition. The caraway seeds add so much flavor, and the raisins sweetness. But really could you add what you like! Nuts, seeds, dried fruit, it would all be good.

Soft Polenta: Soaked, Nixtamalized and Delicious

March 12, 2009 by KimiHarris 58 Comments

ng_softpolentaWhen I served a bowl of this soft, flavorful polenta, topped with simple marinara sauce to my two year old daughter last night, she dug in with enthusiasm even though she had never eaten polenta before. She then turned to me and said “Thanks for making this!” in her darling little toddler voice, doing so for the first time without prompting. I love serving dishes like this that get such sweet responses from my daughter.

The best part of it is that this polenta borrows from the wisdom of Mexico in soaking the corn in lime water to release locked up nutrients. Delicious, nutritious and traditional! And did I mention that it’s very frugal too?
