When a food or beverage has such vibrant, natural colors in it, you know that you have a good thing. Just look at the beautiful array above!

A couple of years ago, I was able to fly out to the annual Wise Traditions conference. Besides the very interesting speakers, the part I liked best was the food. They were serving amazing food there, but there were also many vendors who were selling their delicious fare. Zukay Live Foods was one of the stands I visited frequently. I feel in love with their fermented vegetable juices (or, as they call them, kvass) and treated myself to one every day, and, if I remember right, I even came home with one in my suitcase.

So what’s so great about them?

These vegetable juices (made with organic vegetables and celtic sea salt) are naturally fermented so that they are rich with probiotics and enzymes! If you are like me, you can have a hard time reaching the ideal of eating a fermented food several times a day. A product like this can be so helpful in adding variety! Plus, not only do you get the probiotics, but also you get all of the nutrients in the vegetable juice. It’s like vegetable juice on steroids. (They are now sold at many stores nationwide. You can check out whether they are sold near you here.)

One of the goals of Zukay is making fermented vegetables available to a wide audience (such as those who don’t have the time to make their own). Even for those of us who do make our own fermented vegetables at home, there are busy times when having excellent products like this are extremely helpful. Plus, I just think it is good to have a wide variety of real food, cultured products in our diet, and Zukay’s products are a great way to get that!

Anyways, they have branched out into some new flavors since then, so they sent me some of them to try. Here is my description of the flavors I tried:

Veggie Medley: Light in flavor, almost like a salad in a glass, with cucumber notes and tanginess.
Super Green: Lots of green flavor, with a bit of lemon and ginger.
Super Root: The most medicinal in flavor, the “rooty” ingredients like astragalus and burdock root, make this into almost a tonic.
Beet: Simple: This beet kvass allows the sour notes of the ferment to shine along with the beet.
Beet Ginger: The ginger balances the above flavors.

In my family, my husband’s favorite was the Super Root (which was my least favorite), my favorite was the Veggie Medley and the Super Green, and my two year old’s favorite was the Beet. (My six year old wasn’t too sure of any of them). All to say, personal preference here is very apparent!

These are quite rich in flavor, and it is hard to drink the whole thing at once unless you are used to drinking them. However, I am pleased that my two year old will drink a couple sips when I serve it to her, as even that amount will be a probiotic boost! By serving small portions, your bottle will also last longer as well.

Zukay is kindly giving away two prizes today to my readers. One person will receive their choice of 6 bottles of vegetable Kvass (Retail Value approx.$24.75). Ten runner ups will get a coupon for one Zukay drink to use at a local retailer who carries Zukay products. (Each coupon worth approx. $4.95). This contest is only open to those with a US address, and will end on April 18th (winners announced the 19th, and chosen by random.org).

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Disclaimer: I receive a small compensation for doing giveaways with companies. I only do so far companies that I can fully recommend and endorse. Thank you, Zukay, for doing this giveaway with us!

Posted Edit: Zukay is actually giving away the ten coupons to ten people (one each), not just one.

My husband and I have been trying all different flavors and brands of Kombucha and have seen our digestive health greatly improve. I am curious to see what affect the probiotic veggie drink would also have. Thank you for introducing us to another fermented food.

I became hooked on fermented foods 1 1/2 years when i ventured onto the GAPS diet authored by Dr. Natasha McBride. I have been gradually expanding into different foods, varieties, and cultures, and touting the benefits to others of like-minded attitudes. I currently enjoy culturing kefir on raw milk, kombucha, veggies, and lately with beet kvass. It is exciting to know that others share in this enthusiasm. I love hearing others’ ideas on fermented food combinations and mixing flavors. I would love to recieve the Zukay varieties. (Since focusing on including fermented foods with almost every meal I have not been sick once in nearly 2 years. I would enjoy promoting Zukay foods to others!) Thank you, Lora

I love Zukay! I brought home two cases from the last WAPF conference and bought another three cases at my local coop since returning from the conference in November. Obviously, I never want to be without them, because they are SO convenient, delicious, and nourishing. The touch of sweetness is from ground stevia leaves – wasn’t that a creative and healthy way to please those of us with a sweet tooth? A dear friend who was on the GAPS introductory diet, due to intestinal bleeding, began drinking Zukay (at my suggestion) and regained her strength and energy within a couple hours. She, too, keeps her refrigerator stocked with it. By the way, I also use Zukay as a starter for my own ferments at home.
