The Holiday giveaways continue! I have one more scheduled giveaway after this one, so stay tuned! One of my sponsors, The Urban Homemaker has given a very generous item for this giveaway-the largest giveaway item this season for my blog- a Wonder Mill Grain Mill! This baby is worth $259.99. Not only that, but just for entering into the giveaway you can download a free ebook (value $9.99) full of information on baking bread. Read more below.
When I was around eight, my mother got her own grain mill and bosch mixer. On a regular basis she starting turning out homemade whole wheat bread. One of my most fondest “food” memories from my childhood include waiting impatiently for the bread to get done (the smell of homemade baked bread would fill our house) and then slathering on butter and homemade strawberry freezer jam on warm bread and savoring every bite.
It was so good that even I, as an eight year old, knew that something was dramatically different about it compared to store bought. One big reason it tasted so delicious was because my mom milled her own wheat in her electric grinder. It doesn’t get much fresher than that!
Later I learned a few interesting facts about grinding your own grain.
* Freshly milled flour contain more nutrients. Until grains are milled the nutrients are kept relatively safe. But after they are milled, the nutrients can start to lose value quickly. I even read that they could lose up to ninety percent of some of the nutrients in 72 hours (though I was unable to find a study to back that up). Store bought flour can be fairly old and therefore not as nutritious.
*Freshly ground flour won’t go rancid. There is nothing worse than rancid bread, truly. And rancid flour is not good for you either. Whole wheat flour is much more likely to go rancid because it still contains the germ oil, so whole wheat flour is much more perishable than white flour. One more reason to grind it at home.
*Freshly milled whole wheat flour contains more phytase (which is what reduces phytic acid in your bread). According to Amanda Rose’s Ebook on phytic acid one study showed that the phytase levels of flour was higher in freshly ground flour when compared to stored flour. Since reducing phytic acid in bread is important, this is a consideration for home bakers.
I have long been a fan of home ground wheat flour, though I haven’t had the greatest success with my own grinder (it’s a Jupiter), so I wouldn’t want to give that model away. (By the way, am I the only one who has had trouble with the Jupiter grinding the flour really coarse? The flour isn’t workable at all for some projects! I don’t know if it’s the grinder or me). So I was thrilled to give away a better rated grain mill, though it once again left me in the position to be jealous of the prize! I find myself being in the position of needing a new grain grinder, so this grinder is on the top of my list of considerations!
Read this great description.
“For whole grain enthusiasts wanting a slightly quieter grain mill, the Wonder Mill also can mill a wide variety of grains grains and dried beans into high quality, fine to coarse consistency flour, a bit more quickly and more quietly than other electric grain mills.
Since the grain mill separates from the 12 Cup capacity flour canister you can store the flour canister directly into the freezer or on a shelf.
* Six year limited warranty and Lifetime warranty on the milling mechanism.
* Adjusts from pastry-fine to cornmeal texture.
* Size: Milling unit 8”d X 12”h; Flour canister – 8”d X 7.5” h.
* Formerly known as the Whisper Mill. Made in Korea.
* Marilyn’s personal favorite grain mill. I have had mine for 14 years!”
Did you notice that this mill is Marilyn’s favorite? Coming from someone who sells a wide variety of grain mills, that speaks a lot to me.
We won’t be having a coupon code because Marilyn has this mill on sale right now! If you buy before 12/24 you will save 20 dollars. But just for entering into the giveaway contest, you get to download Marilyn’s ebook on baking, which is worth $9.99! This book is full of recipes (At the end she shares how to use the “soaking method” for breads, but the recipes aren’t soaked. You will have to adjust them), information on grain mills, instructions on how to knead and shape bread and more! I thought that was really generous of her.

I’d love to be the lucky winner! A mill is really something I badly need!
It’s true that store bought flours are convenient but taste-wise and nutrition-wise nothing beats fresh milled flour.
Since I’m gluten free, I also bake a lot with nut flours/meal and these go rancid fast! Both my fridge and freezer are filled with grains & flours ;).
Thank you for organizing these giveaways!

I REALLY REALLY want to enter but can’t seem to find an ad blocker option and I can’t see the link either is there any other way to get to the place to enter?

Oh, it would be so wonderful to explore the world of fresh milled flours! What a wonderful give-away!!
Annabeth Goss
WOW!!! Thanks SO much for another fun give-away. I am religious with making bread, and this grinder would be heavenly for our family of 7!!!
Leanne
🙁 Are us Canadians ever going to get some contest love?
KimiHarris
So sorry Leanne. We leave it up to the sponsor who they are willing to ship too. Pretty much all of them have said US only. 🙁
Susie
Wow, you really got the goods!
I’ve looked into this and even considered trying to use our coffee grinder, but nothing came of that. We read about “Ma” in the Little House books grinding flour for their daily bread during The Long Winter and were quite inspired by her strength & resourcefulness. That goes for Laura and Pa too, while they were twisting together those corn husks to burn for fuel. Which is something we can relate to this week in Chicago. But now I digress…
Thanks for offering this giveaway. Like your other commenters, I think it’s great!
Rachelle
I always think of that part of the book when I’m grinding flour! What a shame that they were eating such wholesome freshly ground whole wheat sourdough bread, but they were besides themselves with joy when the trains finally got through bringing white sugar and white flour.
(We’re gonna have to go back much farther than trying to eat like our grandparents!)
Breanne
This looks wonderful! I’ve only baked with fresh flour once, at a friend’s house, but I’ve been using all whole-wheat for several years. I think this is the next step for me! 🙂
Jen @ What's Cooking
wow! That is a GREAT giveaway! Thanks!!!!!!!
Dana N
Oh wow, I am in love! It would be so nice to say goodbye to tasteless/rancid flour. Thanks for a chance to win. Have a happy holiday!
Julie
ohhhhh i’d love to win this one!!!!!
Gaurav
I grew up in a small town in India, as kids we used to make weekly trip to the neighborhood flour mill with grains and return with fresh flour. There is no comparing the flavor of stuff made with store bought flour and freshly ground flour. I would love to win this!
Tammy
Wow! I have been wanting a flour mill for over year now but it just never seems to be in the budget since they are quite expensive. Thanks for the chance to win. *fingers crossed* 🙂 Merry Christmas, Kimi!
lizzykristine
What an amazing giveaway! I bake exclusively gluten-free and have had trouble with my 25lb sacks of flours going rancid, even when stored in the freezer and used within 6 months. 🙁 Being able to buy whole grain and grind myself would be awesome!
Jenn
Just entered! I just got a sourdough starter from a friend of mine a few weeks ago, and a grain grinder would be a perfect buddy for him…
Shannon
What an awesome drawing:) We have been slowly and surely been changing what we eat over the past couple of years. It has been 2 years of making our own bread but I have been wanting to make the change over to use our own ground flour. Thanks for having this drawing:)
Martha
I already have a grain mill from the Urban Homemaker so I’m not going to enter. I just wanted to comment on what a great offer it is. I have her e-book on bread too and it is a great resource. I have it open on my kitchen counter right now since I have grain soaking and will be finishing up the bread this afternoon. She has recipes that are for hand mixing and larger ones for using a mixer.
Marilyn has done very informative phone seminars in the past and I believe she plans to start them up again at some point. I trust those on her mailing list will be informed when that happens.
Marianne
This is an awesome giveaway. I entered, and blogged about it, just because I am so excited.
Thanks Kimi and Marilyn!

What a great giveaway! Grinding my own flour is on my to-do list. It’s one of those adjustments I’m not quite ready for, but I’m gladly anticipating when grinding my own flour becomes part of my routine! But for now, we’re doing a GAPS-based diet and limited grains as much as possible anyway, so no harm there. I have heard so many good things about freshly-ground flour – I’ll bet it makes a lovely bread, Kimi!

I am pretty sure people can order organic wheat berries from Greg Massa at http://www.MassaOrganics.com . We buy a fair amount of wheat from him to sprout and use as chicken feed but I know his primary clients are high end bakeries in the Bay Area who are making their own flour. He has a really neat operation and I am pretty sure he ships the wheat. Just don’t order too much cause I want to still be able to get it for my chickens 🙂
He can also find him on twitter @MassaOrganics

Oh my goodness, what an incredible giveaway! I have been wanting a grain mill so badly, but it just isn’t affordable for our family right now (baby #3 on the way, bringing lots of extra expenses). Thanks for hosting such a great giveaway! (And thanks to the generous sponsor too!)
Lisa
Amazing giveaway! I’ve been thinking about getting mill since we do so much baking, this would be fab!
Julie

Wow, this is exciting. I’ve never eaten fresh ground flour. I’ve made sourdough bread but not with fresh flour. Thanks for such a great giveaway.
Ashley C
That’s great!! I would love to sign up for this. Thanks!
Annie
We actually have a source for local, organic grains! I sort of can’t believe it. But I will have to figure out if/how I could sprout them, then grind them in my food processor. Is that remotely possible??? OR I could win this mill – – – patience, right? 🙂 Thanks!
Ginny V
I’ve been looking at grain mills a lot lately, so this would be great to win! The no-knead bread I’ve been making would be fabulous with fresh flour. Thanks for such a great giveaway!!
Jodi
What a timely post! I have been doing some research and asking people about the best grinder to purchase! Now I know not to buy a Jupiter…. who knows?… maybe I will win the contest and save some money! 😉

I’ve entered the giveaway … I had a grain mill that I got from Marilyn years ago, but we can’t use it anymore since we’ve had to go gluten-free. I really need another one! Thank you for having this giveaway … Marilyn is just precious to do this, isn’t she!
Bekah
I’ve also entered! I don’t have a Jupiter, but the Family Grain Mill (almost the same thing) and I also find that it doesn’t grind fine enough for a great bread. Good, yes, but not great. I sell my dough, so quality is important!
Rochelle
I would LOVE to be able to grind my own flour!
Mary P.
Signed up! I have a Nutrimill but would love to win this to give to a friend!!
Ann Quinn
OK, I entered on their site a while ago, now I’ll enter here. Thank you!
Ann
Meg
great contest, I signed up!
Rayelle
I signed up last night. A grain mill is something I probably won’t be able to purchase for several years. I’ve heard so much about how much better the flour tastes when it’s so fresh, not to mention the health benefits. I’d love to win this more than any other giveaway I’ve ever entered!
Kelly
This would be fabulous to have!!
Anna
what a great concept! i’ve never used a grainmill but can imagine the possibilities!
Joy
Thanks for this great giveaway!
