Now that the weather is colder again, we have been pulling our favorite soup recipes. For Thanksgiving, I made this special “Hearth” broth and turned it into a broth-y light soup as our first course on Thanksgiving. (It was actually one of our favorite dishes of the meal!). Now we are enjoying soups made out of our Thanksgiving turkey.
We love homemade broths and soups so much around here. But that shouldn’t surprise you as I am the person who wrote a soup cookbook (affiliate link), Ladled: Nourishing Soups for All Seasons, solely so that I could share that love of soup and broth with you all! It’s full of recipes that we use on a regular basis (recently we have been enjoying the dairy-free version of the clam chowder and the Egyptian Red Lentil Soup with Caramelized Onions).
In celebration of soups, we wanted to giveaway some copies of Ladled: Nourishing Soups for All Seasons! My hope is that those who win this book will also find the same enjoyment and nourishment out of soups that we do.
Three reasons we like soups
If you were wondering why I am such a fan of soups and stews, here are a couple of reasons why.
Soup is delicious
We have to start with the obvious! While granted, if your only experience with soups is from lackluster restaurants and canned soup, soups can leave a bad taste in your mouth. But homemade soups are gloriously delicious! They are satisfying both to the appetite and to our sense of taste as we can build so many flavors into soups. Everything from simple lentil soups to fiery Thai soups, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Soup is Nourishing
There are so many potential health benefits of eating homemade soups! This is especially true when made with nourishing homemade broths. There are so many potential benefits that they are too many to list here! But if you are curious, check out this list of 10 reasons why homemade broth should be your diet, and the health benefits of broth.
Soup is frugal
Soup can really help stretch out your budget. Sure, there are expensive soups to make, (I have some really special ones in my book, too) but so many of them are far cheaper to make than many meals. We have our favorite frugal standbys that we rotate through our menu and our budget thanks us.
If possible, working on a cookbook devoted to soups helped me grow to love soup and stews even more. In this book, I share many different broth recipes, simple soups, old family favorites, soups inspired by our favorite restaurants, easy creamy vegetable soups, rice congees, and many more. Here are two recipes from the book to check out. Simple Thai Broth (a reader and personal favorite!) and Miso Brown Rice Congee. Also, download this preview of the book with three recipes! (It’s a PDF and we kept it lower quality so that it wouldn’t take up so much space on your computer, but it allows you to get a glimpse of the book format).
Would you like to win a copy for yourself (or if you already own it, to give as a gift?)

My husband doesn’t really like soup but I think there are several recipes in the book that sound like he might like them – hearty and flavorful.

Every recipe I’ve ever tried of yours has been a winner, so I expect the ones in this book would be no different!
Incidentally, I once asked a restaurant to see the list of ingredients in their soup, and it was a nauseatingly long 3-page list of chemicals and additives, with very little food to be found. Even with health food store soups, you run the risk of hidden forms of MSG and other undesirable yuckiness.
Bring on the homemade soups! Mmmmm… good.
