Do you remember that scene in Father of the Bride when the daughter Annie breaks up her engagement because her fiance gave her a blender as a gift? Poor guy, he had broken an unspoken rule about romantic gifts: No practical ones allowed! Now admittedly, I wouldn’t have been 100% percent happy with a blender (or a mop) as a wedding gift! But after five years of marriage I must have gotten a lot more practical because my wish lists are always full of practical things!
Sure, I want organic perfume and fair trade chocolate and roses too. But I happen to think that practical gifts that will be used on a weekly or daily basis are romantic too, whether it’s the man or the woman who mops! I know one sweet family who’s dad worked a low paying ministry job. He wore button up shirts to work and so had to iron his shirts every day (he was very particular about his shirts and liked to do it himself). Like I said, they weren’t paid much, so money was very tight. Day after day he struggled with a ironing board that had a sticky substance from his wife’s craft projects on it and a leaking iron. So for his birthday, his wife bought him what she knew he would really like, a new iron and ironing board. She told us later that he absolutely loved his gift and was so excited about it! Why? Because it made his life so much easier.
And that’s why I want this mop, it will make my life so much easier.

Right now, we are renting the other side of the house from my parents (their house is kind of set up like a duplex). I don’t even really own a mop (I might have some dusty old thing somewhere), but just walk over to the other side and borrow my mom’s steam mop. Oh, I almost forgot. My mop came with a dry mop attachment. I have finally been able to get those nasty cobwebs out of my faulted ceilings and clean the dust off the windows I can’t reach. We have a huge clock hanging in the living room which is impossible for me to take down to dust, but I can use the dry mop on that and it is great!. I can’t wait until I can save up some more in order to get another set of cloths for my walls and counters! The Norwex products I have are truly wonderful and have made cleaning easier and healthier! I’m a practical gift lover for sure. Usually for Christmas Mr Chiots and I buy something for each other that we’re both needing. This year it was a nice water filter for the kitchen. Who needs reindeer socks and little gadgets, might as well pool all your money and get something you need. But then again I’m a practical person, so no Valentines flowers for me, how about a blueberry bush for the garden?

I think practical gifts can be romantic if the gift shows that someone pays attention and knows what’s important to you. I got my husband new work boots for Valentine’s day this year. Definitely not romantic by conventional standards, but it’s something he really wants and is never willing to buy for himself.
On the same note, I was eyeing the blenders at the store last weekend and I told him he could get me one for Valentine’s day if he was strapped for ideas. He kind of laughed and said, “No way, that’s the kind of gift that gets you in the doghouse.” So I tried to explain to him that I seriously would not be disappointed – our blender is old and I’d have fun using a new one. I don’t think he believed me. 😉

I like unpractical gifts for Valentine’s Day but practical ones for almost any other time of the year. I just think it is so nice to get flowers or fun things on that day. My daughter was bornon that day and was the BEST Valentine’s Day present ever!

I’d love to win this, I absolutely love practical gifts. I don’t have a mop at all, I get down on hands and knees with a rag to scrub the floor. A cheapy mop has never seemed like it would be an improvement to me, but I think the Norwex would be.
My husband bought me knives the very first birthday I had that we were together. That was the most romantic gift EVER. I am still using them 13 years later. Practical gifts definitely tend to be gifts that keep on giving.

I love practical gifts too! My grain mill, stand mixer, cute dishtowels from Crate & Barrel, a salad spinner, flannel sheets…almost all of my favorite gifts the last few years have been practical gifts!
I don’t like roses, am trying to avoid sweets right now, and can’t really wear jewelry on a day-to-day basis. While I always appreciate pretty hair accessories, my husband got me a Dutch oven for Christmas and it was exactly what I wanted. My mom even has a hang-up that any gift cards she gets us can’t be used for practical things either, ever since she found out my sister’s friend used his Target gift card on a mop!

I am a big fan of practical gifts!!! Anything that makes my life easier or healthier rocks! I remember one time early on in our marraige, my husband sent me flowers – I made sure he knew I appreciated the thought, but asked him not to do that anymore – do you know what I could have done with that $50?? LOL A lot more than flowers 🙂
I mopped the floor the old-fashioned way, by hand, for the first time last week, and actually found I liked it much better! You get better leverage for those stuck-on spots, and it felt like a good burn for my leg muscles (did it mostly squatting) rather than a strain on my back like with a mop. However, I would certainly be willing to give this mop a try! No soap is a plus.

I am also a big fan of practical gifts. My hubby has given me nice things over the years, nice jewelry, flowers,and Godiva Chocolates. And I loved them all, especially the chocolates! But by far, my favorite gift has been my Breville convection-toaster oven. That thing will cook anything better than my big oven ever would. I love it!!! By the way, I would love to win that mop. O.K. I could probably use this on my wood floors & tile. The best part about the mop is throwing the mop head in the washing machine to clean it. No yucky rinsing it in dirty mop water.
It’s so ironic to see this article when my Norwex mop just arrived yesterday. It was the hostess incentive for the norwex party I hosted. These products are really great and make cleaning almost fun! 😉

We’ve been using this mop for a few months now on all my hardwoods and bathroom and kitchen tile. It’s amazing — cleans so much better than the steam mop. And no need to use electricity. Plus, we use essential oils with this mop, so the house smells fantastic.

I TOTALLY agree with that statement. I hate cleaning and will do anything and I mean ANYTHING to avoid it. When my husband and I first started dating, I remember he just flat out told me I needed to buy a vacuum cleaner — I did not own one — LOL! And I had a dog.
Now I actually enjoy cleaning.
I wonder if it was all the nasty chemicals I intuitively hated — all that Windex and Comet, etc. Plus it’s just drudgery, dragging around a dirty sloppy bucket.

On a different note I hope it’s ok for me to change topics. I feel all of you readers and especially Kimi will most likely be able to help me. You see, my boyfriend just proposed!! I’m so excited! We’re planning on a July 30, 2010 wedding. We’ve already reserved our local Audubon (the money goes to help feeding and caring for the birds). Here’s where I need help: we want our ceremony/reception focused on the people and truly celebrating our love. We do not have a lot of money and we want to be as eco-friendly as possible. I’ve looked into organic caterers and it’s more money than we wanted to spend. Any ideas of what we could do??? Not just with food, but anything?? I hope you all don’t mind I jumped from mops to weddings! I would not mind at all to receive a mop as a wedding present though! Practical gifts are actually my favorite! Happy Valentine’s Day!
What kind of facilities will you have at the Audubon? We self-catered our wedding. It was at a park, so there was a large grill available and we enlisted my dad, uncle and one other guy to be in charge of the salmon. Had a couple of other people working on the salads, and my fiance and I had a great time going out and picking out a bunch of different cheeses that we’d never heard of before to make a cheese tray. Instead of having a bar we bought a modest number of bottles of wine and spread them out on the tables. (Beer available in ice buckets, too). We did find someone to make a cake for us – she was the only person on site that day who wasn’t a close friend. She used flowers to give the cake the appearance of being bigger than it really was. A cousin played the processional on the trumpet. Two different friends covered photography for us as their wedding gift. We had a number of people afterwards comment on how much they enjoyed really being a part of the wedding instead of just a spectator.
Wild flowers in mason jars were an attractive alternative to formal arrangements. It was fall, so we bought a couple of giant potted chrysanthemums to mark the “altar”, too. My mom wanted to get us something from a blacksmith she knew, so we picked out items that would work in our home to decorate the head table. We used a combination of rented and purchased linens (rented the white ones and found a few colored ones for accents that I still use) and rented just enough chairs to provide seating for those who really needed to sit, and to provide an idea of where people were supposed to gather. We planned on renting glasses, but found that buying them at Ikea was significantly cheaper. Enough guests were interested in taking a few home that we didn’t end up stuck with more than we’d want. We did buy paper plates and napkins. If you know anyone who is in a band, or have other access to a sound system, it’s easy to skip the dj and just use your ipod.
We had also planned on having people throw grass seed after the ceremony, but forgot.
It ended up being such a wonderful experience of love – not just between my husband and myself, but also the surrounding love of our whole community. What a beautiful way to start a marriage!

Wow, what a cool looking mop. Cleaning actually is very satisfying when I get enough ooomph to start it. 🙂 Our kitchen floor is being cleaned constantly and I can still not really keep it clean. I’m sure that’s just how it is w/ kids, but it would be nice to have an easier way to approach it.

Just as an FYI to those that may not win: There are patterns all over the internet for knitting a cover for the wet Swiffer mop. I made one in a day or so. I spray my homemade all-purpose cleaner, (water, Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds, tea tree oil), on the floor and just wipe it up. The cover goes in the laundry when it gets dirty. I’m sure it wouldn’t be too difficult to sew covers from scrap fabrics or rags, either 🙂 This was a better solution for me because I had just run out of wet Swiffer pads. Plus,
this way I don’t have to toss the actual mop part in a landfill! You can probably even use microfiber rags and attach ties or buttons to them so that they fit around the Swiffer.
