In a plastic world, it can be quite difficult to find non-plastic alternatives. Many of us have become aware of the dangers, but find it hard to avoid. One mother is making a difference by bringing us stainless steel alternatives at The Tickle Trunk! Today, we will be giving away one of her products, a stainless steel ice cube tray, to one lucky commenter.
Let me tell you how I liked the one she gave me to review. I found it easy to use and beautiful as well. For easy removal, just don’t fill it up too high. If you do happen to fill it too high and find it hard to get the ice out, a simple run of hot water on the bottom side of the ice cube tray it will make it a cinch to use. (At least that’s what worked for me!).
Uses for this Ice Cube Tray
*Making ice cubes (no, really?)
*Freezing chicken broth cubes from homemade broth
*Freezing homemade baby food
*Making homemade “Mounds” Candy Bars
Do you want one?

I would love one of these. I have started steaming and then pureeing kale for use in smoothies. This would be great to use for that or to freeze chicken broth. Then I could get rid of my plastic ones.

Wow! what a wonderful give away! I’d love to win one of these. We have been eliminating plastic slowly and have been using mostly SS and glass cookware and utensils at home. I’m also looking for a stainless steel popsicle maker. I checked the website you posted, looks like she might carry it in future.
Kimi, do you know any other website where I can buy Stainless steel popsicle maker? I need to get it for my daughter and for a gift for my little nephew.
Danielle
I would really like to have one of these. I am trying to get rid of as much plastic in my home as possible. I saw these on another blog, that I had heard about from you. I already follow you on twitter, and have for a while. Getting messages from twitter helps, because for some reason I don’t get the email that you have posted somethign new until like 12 or more hours later. I really love your blog. Please keep up the good work. I have learned alot from reading on here every day, even when you haven’t posted something new. I have tried many of your recipes and I am gonna try the brownie pudding cake soon. Thanks for all you do!
Alyssa
What a great idea!!! I was just thinking about how I have removed most plastics from my childrens life EXCEPT for two things (1) ice cube trays and (2) popsicle molds. After typing this, I am going to jump over to the referenced website and see if they have popsicle molds. Thanks so much!!!

I would love to have one of these!!! Most of the time my family lives in South Asia and the weather can stay between 100-120 for a long time. To beat the heat we use a lot of ice in our fresh young coconut smoothies. I also blend mangos and freeze it to so that we can still enjoy mangos after the season is over. Thanks!

Why wouldn’t everyone love a stainless steel tray instead of plastic? It sounds like a great product!
Karen
I’d love these; going to the site right now. Thanks for posting!
Jennifer Shultz
It would be great for freezing raw cream from our sweet Jersey cow, and freezing mint ice-cubes for herb tea this summer!!

Oh wow! I never knew there were stainless steal ice cube trays. My 5 kiddos and I have been going through our house lately trying to rid ourselves of plastic and find a suitable replacement. I never even thought of the ice cube trays!! Thanks for enlightening me further.
Gia
I would love these ice cube trays!! Would use them for ice first. I dont have any ice because I don’t want plastic trays.
Amber
Thank you so much for this featured product – I’ll be checking out Tickle Trunk’s website to see what other cool items they offer.
I also want to say thank you for such a great website, I’ve been sending the link to everyone I know and I use your recipes often. Once my kids grew up I slowly got away from cooking good satisfying meals for just me, it seemed like too much of a hassle to come home after all day at work and then begin the task of cooking with the chore of cleaning it up hanging over my head once I was done. You have inspired me to begin to take better care of myself and part of that is to enjoy the process and of course I enjoy it much more since I make enough to last for more than one meal. Thank you!

I had looked into the vintage trays on ebay a couple years ago but was discouraged by price/condition of, etc. To the great dismay of my house guests, I have just been without ice cubes. Our family would rather have warm drinks than plastic-contaminated ones. This contest is a great opportunity. Thank you Kimi and Tickle Trunk!
Mary
I would love one! I used to have some years ago and then got rid of them. How dumb was that? I would use them for freezing lemon juice cubes from my lemons. 🙂
Anali
I’ve been looking for an alternative to the plastic ice trays they have everywhere now. It seems like it would be much healthier.
Christine
I love anything you can freeze into ice cubes. So handy and our whole house is going green so why not. Also I have to take this opportunity to let you know I love your site!!! Cooking with you online all the time.

Hello Kimi,
I would like the stainless steel ice cube tray because our family is trying to get away from using the plastic ones and this is a good alternative.
Your blog has encouraged me. I know that everyone who follows it is very grateful for all of the time and effort that you have applied. God bless and keep up the good work!

I’d love a stainless steel ice cube tray!
So many uses for this product- I know I’d use it for broth, juices, herbs, & pesto. But now I’ve got so many new ideas from your readers – yogurt, steamed pureed spincach/kale, eggs, marshmallows, and mounds bars?
Thanks for your wonderful site. I’m just beginning the switch to a healthier lifestyle and the info from your blog has been very helpful. I also follow you on twitter – KarenFPL

I love the rectro stainless steel ice cube try and the crank to loosen the ice. It’s so 50ish and 60ish. That’s how old I am and you don’t see them sold in stores anymore. I would love to collect one. Brings back my childhood memories.
KimiHarris
Hey All,
First, getting some WONDERFUL ideas for uses of my ice cube tray! Thank you!
Second, thanks for the sweet remarks about my blog. It really, really means a lot to me.
Third, some of you asked, and I have updated the post to reflect this, only those in Canada and the US are eligible to win this give away. Sorry!
Hilary
Little one #1 will be here in a few months. We’d love to start him off plastic-free!
Gail
Thanks for the information regarding the product. . . and also the link to this great website. It has many other great items! I’m getting closer all the time to being plastic free. This ice cube tray would bring me one step closer!
Cameo
To answer your question of why I would like one of these ice cube trays, you listed some reasons and you listed a recipe for homemade Mounds bars. Is there really any other reason anyone would want these? Just kidding. I would use them for that purpose and many others. I love the ideas of putting home made chicken stock in them; among others: homemade baby food for my nephew, homemade 100% fruit (with a lotta love added) popsicles for my 2 year old daughter who loves and begs for “op cream” (anything frozen and tasty really). In a world full of toxins, I really am just trying to take little steps to keep us all healthier and I see this stainless steel freezing tray as just another little step towards overall healthy living. Thank you!
Rashmi
Oh, this tray has such an antique feel to it. I would love to win this give-away.
Natalie
I’ve heard plastic isn’t as healthy as stainless steel, and especially since you’re putting ice cubes in your water to drink, it would be great to use these!
Titus
Awesome idea! My wife and I have been looking all over for metal ice cube trays! We are going to use it to make baby food popsicles for our Son and new baby coming soon! I hope we win! Keep up the great blog.
God Bless,
Titus, Natalie & Family
Heather
I would love to enter to win an ice cube tray b/c we are slowly trying to get away from plastics around here… or, at least use BPA-free plastics. Thanks!
Alison @ Hospitality Haven
I would love to try this as I currently only own a plastic ice cube tray and thus don’t use it! As the summer is here, it would be nice to be able to make my drinks a little cooler. 🙂

Like Susan W and Rosita, I too grew up with metal ice cube trays. When I moved out of the house, I can remember thinking….”who needs those old things that mom and dad used? These plastic ones are great!” Having children with so many allergies, and trying to rid my home of plastics – this would be a great reminder of my childhood while offering something safer for my whole family!
ps – can’t twitter. don’t know how. i was feeling good to just be able to find/use your website 🙂
Rebecca
I would love to have a plastic free ice cube tray, one more way to eliminate plastics. (Now if I could find a good way to transtport leftovers to work without using plastic I would be ecstatic). My grandmother used to use the metal ice cube trays, I have fond memories of her taking ice cubes out and making frozen orange juice treats for me when I was little.
Erin
That ice cube tray just got me so excited. I must have one!!!
Emma
Finally! I have been searching for months! We don’t use the icemaker in our freezer because the filter can’t remove chloramine, but then the plastic ice cube trays have other chemicals.
Steph
My husband would be elated if we got some of these trays. Our refrigerator has an ice maker, but the water line isn’t hooked up so, for the time being, we are ice-less. I don’t care for ice in my drinks, but could use some non-plastic trays for freezing stock and candies and whatnot.
Nurturing Wisdom
What a great ice cube tray!
We’ve been plastic-free in the kitchen for some time. I store things in the fridge and freezer in jars, such as the wide mouth salsa jars.
I would love to have a stainless steel ice cube tray to store individual servings of whatever gain I’ve cooked so I can use the cubes (one cube per portion) for future meals.
BUT, I may give the tray away to Stephanie@One Big Adventure. if I win. Taking care of a loved one who is sick is a tremendous job, particularly if the loved one is going through chemo-lose of appetite, etc. This will help Stephanie in lessening her workload and will help keep her son James nourished while going through chemo.
Kimi, thanks for holding this give away. Am following you on witter.

Oh how fun! My grandmother used to have some a lot like these and she froze milk in them to make milkshakes. One of my favorite childhood memories! 🙂
Hamilton Doula
I’d love to have one of these. I love the lever and I love the retro styling of it.

I’m also a new follower and retweeted your giveaway tweet!

We go through a lot of ice cubes during the summer in our tea. 🙂 I’d also love to start making and freezing healthful chocolate snacks for my man. Being able to switch from plastic to stainless would be wonderful.
Rebecca
Certainly would be great at our house for several of the reasons you mentioned–stock cubes, baby food (getting ahead for when my now two-month old is ready!), but also toothpick popsicles for my four-year old, coffee and juice cubes to keep drinks cold w/out watering them down, and (saved the best for last) homemade peanut butter (or any nut butter) cups.

First of all I love your blog and I would love this ice cube tray because I am striving to create the healthiest possible home for my family and this would be another step in that direction!
Kellie Jordan
Hi there! My sis sent me your site- we both love the mounds! 😀 Thanks for sharing your inspiring ideas and recipes; you make it easier and more fun to get all the nutrients we need, and then some.
The metal ice-cube tray is just freegin awesome. We actually have given up use of the cubes for the time being, as our [ancient] fridge has an [equally ancient] ice-maker that died around the end of the actual ice age, we think. Really, though, we’ve been quite reluctant to purchase plastic trays and so have gone without for the time being. A frozen mug on a hot day seems to do the trick, but a convenient delivery method for stock is immeasurable. Hope you pick us!
Jen B.
Love popping in here to read what you are up to and I just happened upon your contest. Awesome!!

I ordered from Tickle Trunk due to the last article you wrote about them. I am pleased with the lunchbox and containers. I never thought about ice cube trays and am so glad that you called it to my attention. I have been using the plastic ones and definately want to replace them with stainless trays now. I have four children and we use alot of ice, so need to start a collection of them. This would be a great start for me!
Ann
Would love one to freeze my veggie purees.
Milkmaid
My goodness! Look how we all come out of the woodwork for a give-away. I’m a bit embarrassed….but not too embarrassed to not enter! Thanks for all you do here, Kimi.
Paula
I would LOVE to win this to freeze broth to use for my son’s food. He is allergic to SO many foods that it makes making meals difficult. He is allergic to plastic too. Right now I am using glass Ball jars I got at a garage sale, but am pretty sure they are not freezer safe. Thankfully nothing bad has happened .. yet. 😀 Stainless steel would be better. 😀 Thanks for the link to her site! I will be checking out her stuff!
Lydia
The reason I would like to have a stainless steel ice cube trays would be to help continue to be self reliant and live off the land. It is my greatest desire to use the natural resources given to us to promote healthy lives. As I have seen from the numerous uses for this item. I know it would be a wonderful addition for all the new things that would be created to enhance our lives, as well as having been subscribed to this awesome post that has given me great encouragement.

Wow you have a lot of readers! Sign me up! I almost bought plastic ones so I could make ice out of FILTERED WATER, instead of the fluoridated, chloriminated junk coming out of the tap. See, my computer doesn’t even think chloraminated is a word. Definitely shouldn’t be happening to the water. Back to washing dishes with my rubber gloves. 🙂

This tray looks so retro, that they remined me some one of my aunts had long time ago… I loved it!!! Plus, I’ve never thought of an alternative to plastic trays, so thisis a really good option.

Sorry, I made a mistake typing my e-mail. This is the right one.

I remember my mom having these when I was a kid! I freeze everything in cubes: tomato sauce, lemon juice, chicken stock, pumpkin, not to mention ice. It would be “very cool” to win the stainless tray!
