In a plastic world, it can be quite difficult to find non-plastic alternatives. Many of us have become aware of the dangers, but find it hard to avoid. One mother is making a difference by bringing us stainless steel alternatives at The Tickle Trunk! Today, we will be giving away one of her products, a stainless steel ice cube tray, to one lucky commenter.
Let me tell you how I liked the one she gave me to review. I found it easy to use and beautiful as well. For easy removal, just don’t fill it up too high. If you do happen to fill it too high and find it hard to get the ice out, a simple run of hot water on the bottom side of the ice cube tray it will make it a cinch to use. (At least that’s what worked for me!).
Uses for this Ice Cube Tray
*Making ice cubes (no, really?)
*Freezing chicken broth cubes from homemade broth
*Freezing homemade baby food
*Making homemade “Mounds” Candy Bars
Do you want one?

Baby #5 will soon need home made baby food…thanks for the great contest.

I would love to receive this. I have looked for these in the past. My grandparents always had these, and my sisters and I loved to take turns pulling the lever to get the ice cubes out. I would like my boys to give it a try.
Susan W.
I love these trays! This is what (except they weren’t steel) we had when I was a kid and using it again will sure bring back memories. Thanks so much for the opportunity.
Kimberly Duffy
I would love one of these! We have tried eliminating as much plastic as possible which means…no ice cubes!
This would come in handy for boiling my stock down into a syrup and freezing them in little cubes so my freezer isn’t jam-pack full of bags of stock.
Heidi
I have been curious about these for awhile now. It would be a special treat to be able to have one of these.

Oh just looking at the picture makes me all nostalgic. My grandparents had these, and I would love to toss our plastic ones in favor of this beautiful relic replica!

I feel as though I am just beginning my journey into going plastic-free, as I keep discovering “evil plastic” where I least expect it! One of the things I want to replace is those oh-so-easy plastic bottles of additive-laden lemon and lime juices…I plan to freeze fresh lemon/lime juice in ice-cube trays for ease of use, but oh no! The ice cube trays are plastic, too!
This would be PERFECT! (I hope I win!) 🙂
Erica
I would use these for making homemade baby food (baby #2 is on the way!) and also making your delicious “mounds” bars -my family loves those! Thanks for the chance to win!
Soli
Me! I’ve started making homemade broth (first batch this last weekend) and froze a bunch when it was done. I’d love to have another option that’s plastic free. Plus right now I don’t know if I can afford the tag for these.
Also now following you on twitter. (am witchchild there)

These remind me of being at my grandma’s house!
I like to buy the Odwalla Superfood at Costco and then freeze it in ice cube size to use in my smoothies in the morning.
I also use ice cube trays to freeze basil at the end of the summer (thanks to Kalyn’s Kitchen blog I know how to do that!). And the same technique works for mint.
Thanks!
Anne
I would LOVE this! I recently discovered nourishing/traditional foods and my husband and I are thriving on our new “diet”–although he jokes that our kitchen often looks like a science lab! Our daughter is almost eight months old and really starting to get into food. I was just lamenting the fact that ice cube trays are all made of plastic–something we avoid in all other products for her. With this ice cube tray, I would feel even better about feeding her her mama-made food!
I would enter on twitter, but we live in rural Vermont and don’t even have cell phone reception. We do, however, have plenty of access to raw milk–haha!
Sarah (Coffee Beans and Curry Leaves)
While I still use far more plastic products than I should, the more I read about the leaching from plastics, the more I want to minimize using them. This metal ice cube tray would definitely give me a push in the right direction!
Not to mention that I can never get the ice cubes out of ordinary ice cube trays! Also, I love other commenters suggestions to freeze lemon juice, Superfood, or the like. What great ideas!

I would love these! I pitched our old ice cube trays when we moved and haven’t replaced them yet since I despise buying plastic. What a wonderful solution!
Vika
We’re always looking for the safest options but finances don’t permit buying everything. We’d love to replace our plastic trays with these great ones!
Thanks!
Amy
I would love these! They’re just like the ones my grandma used to have when I was a kid.
Amanda
These are such a fabulous idea. My 2nd just turned 6 mo, and as we speak, I have a regular ice cube tray full of avocado in the freezer – how I would rather be using a stainless steel one!
Thanks for the opportunity 🙂
Roseanne
I have very fond memories of these from when I was a kid. As we are eliminating the plastic from our home in preparation for our new baby, I had forgotten all about these. Thank you so much for the trip down memory lane!
Stephanie F
I would love to win these! Anything to get away from plastic is an upgrade in my book.
Jill
Stylish and practical! What a great addition this would be to my new apartment/kitchen!
Jenn
With a 3 year old boy at home I’ve been slowly working at taking all things plastic out of the house. I really would like to be a grandma someday, ya know? It’s amazing where plastic is that you don’t even think about. Icecube tray? Hadn’t even thought of that one. So here’s to trying to get more plastic free!
Brittany
I would love to get rid of my icky plastic ice cube trays and use these beautiful ones for making ‘stock cubes’!
Kelly
I would love to win this. I always hated that I was going through the extra effort of making the best, most nutritious food for my baby and then freezing it is questionable plastic ice cube trays. I wish I would have known about this because I think I would have invested in a couple!
Karen
This is a timely post. I have always wanted to make my own baby food but just never had the ability. Now that I have another child with allergies and we’ve changed our diet, I am now in a place where I must make baby food. I was just thinking this morning that I wish I had another way of freezing her baby food without the plastic ice cube trays. I suppose I would just love to have a set of metal trays to put her food into and have easiy accessible for everyone who might feed her (me, dad, 10 yod sister.) Thank you for posting about these. 🙂
Katie
Ooh, ooh, pick me, pick me!!!
I am trying to replace all our plastic with glass and stainless steel! I’ve replaces all my Tupperware with Pyrex, but I am working on other things such as freezer storage. This would be GuuuurrrATE!
Katie
I am now following you on Twitter, my name there is shiregirl2001
gaylei
oh, thanks! i’ve been looking for a safer ice tray to use – this would be great!
FoodRenegade
Oh I’d LOVE this! Do you really have to ask why? Isn’t it obvious? I’d also go for all her stainless steel food storage containers. Too bad she doesn’t have stainless steel wine glasses. My wine glasses break almost as quickly as I buy them!
FoodRenegade
Oh, and I’m following you on Twitter.
Kim
I would love these, too. Especially since popsicle season is upon us!
Holly Sweet
My husband and I are just starting to create a clean, safe home for ourselves. This would certianly get us on the right track!
Thanks!!
Sweta
How cool-haven’t seen that here at all. That reminds me of our ice trays back in India-all made with stainless steel. I won’t be surprised to find everyone using plastic ones when we go back 🙁
Elizabeth
I want one of these so bad!! I would use if for all the things you listed and right now making yummy little fruit pops for my daughter!
Thank you,
Elizabeth
Kelly
I would love one of these trays! I remember my grandmother had a few of these when I was little that my aunt used to pop the ice out of at family dinners. (I wonder if she tossed all of them when they moved?) I love all the ideas I already read about here, also would be nice to freeze lemon/lime juice to just toss into water bottles this summer for a nice “squeeze” of lemon in my drink (add a little stevia and you have instant lemonade!).
slawebb
I remember these from my grandma’s house when I was little. I’d love to have it so I can get rid of my plastic ones. I make ice, freeze baby food and pesto in mine. Baby #3 is due in September. Hope I win!
Megan
Not sure if you’re willing to send to Belgium, but if so, sign me up! Staying away from plastic is a good thing, plus it’s hard to find such products over here. Thanks!
CoconutGal
What a fun surprise when I came to your site today! I have been trying to find stainless steel ice cube trays for so long!!! Thank you so much for sharing the Tickle Trunk website– I am bookmarking it for sure.
I would love to win this so I can freeze pureed squash, coconut meat, almond milk, etc. It’s so nice to freeze big batches of things rather than let it go to waste and then they make great additions to smoothies or soups. Yum!
Thanks.
Shannon
sign me up!
Becky
I’ve been wanting to make your mounds candy bars for so long, and this would be the perfect excuse to finally try them! Maybe we’d make ice occasionally, too.
Jessie
I just broke one of our plastic ones recently – so this would be quite a timely gift.
I would use it for ice, stock & maybe even pesto! yumm!
thanks for the opportunity to win!
Megan
I just ordered a Safe Sippy for my toddler this morning. This would be a great addition to my kitchen. Thanks for all the great information Kimi!
Heather
I’d love this! Looking for alternatives to plastic lately.
Brook
I think these are wonderful and I’d love one. We are little by little, eliminating plastic and this would be perfect. Thanks!
Seema
A lot has changed in my house since I discovered your blog, Kim, and through you, NT. We use a lot of garlic+ginger+green chilli in our cooking (Indian cooking) so I freeze those and these would be perfect – the stainless steel would help with the garlic odor (as delish as it is, I don’t love garlicky ice cream) and we’re trying to get pregnant, so I can see years of utility from this neat little thing.
Rachel
What a great giveaway! DS is 4 months and I hope to be making babyfood for him soon.
Dr. Jean Layton
I grew up with this type of ice cube maker and have been trying to find them ever since.
I love to make marshmallows in them, that way they are already cut and all. Just need to spray the center with oil before using.
I follow you on twitter already but will retweet the contest.
Carrie
My grandparents had ice cube trays just like those. . .
I’m slowly getting rid of the plastic in my kitchen. This would be a lovely way to replace my plastic ice cube trays.
Mindy
Oh, I want some of those!
I’m trying to get away from plastics, but with our current budget, it’s requiring baby steps. This would really help out. 🙂
Elisa
I’d love to have one of those! I am continually trying to find alternatives to all of the plastics that we use, especially anything that is heated or frozen. Thanks!
Kathy
I’d love to have more stainless products. We ordered water bottles from Tickle Trunk and use them all the time. They hold up great! We’re drinking more water because of the convenience of these bottles.
I remember my grandma had ice cube trays like these, but as noted, they were aluminum and I’m sure we all ingested all kinds of bad stuff from them. All the more reason to replace our old plastic things with something better! I’m sure I’ll be ordering from these guys again before long. Thanks for this!
Stephanie @ One Big Adventure
Oh wow!!! I grew up with trays like these, only I’m pretty sure they were aluminum.
In addition to many of the *great* ideas already shared, we freeze yogurt (without pectin and and with live cultures) in our plastic ice cube trays to use as starter for our homemade yogurt (perfect 2T quantities). The biggest eater of our homemade yogurt is my 4-year old son, who is on chemo for leukemia. Lord willing, he will finish chemo in October (it’s a long road for childhood leukemia) and we are trying to remove as many known toxins from his diet as possible as we, hopefully, come to the end of this race.
Thanks for offering this! and thanks for all the great tips and recipes you offer, Kimi!
