I wanted to let you all know that I will be back to posting on Wednesday. We are currently in Canada for a short vacation tiring ourselves out. It’s been a whirlwind of traveling, working, sightseeing, and traveling some more. I now have a great distaste for our car. Elena however has a great love of hotels though she is very glad that we will be home tomorrow.

We have found out a few things about Canada while we were here. Paramedics aren’t paid well, apparently, because they are only paid for the time they spend on a call but not when they are on call. So they’ve been on strike. (An example of government controlled health care?) There is a lot of big beautiful pasture lands with cows, sheep and other animals in the area we are in. They don’t have good Mexican food (or so the natives tell us). They don’t know how to spell fiber (they spell it ‘fibre’). And, there are signs saying “when children are on the highway, drive slow”. We don’t let children on the highway in the US, and we stop when they are. πŸ˜‰

Last night, I spent a long evening with Stephanie from keeperofthehome.org and her husband Ryan. I had a wonderful time connecting with her and finally meeting face to face (and our husbands had a lot in common too). It was also very nice to have a homemade meal after too many meals out. She made us some delicious enchiladas with a black bean and avocado salad.

You went to the West? Sometimes I miss my home country so much – I’m from the Rocky Mountains. Paramedics are paid pittence for being on call – although other government on call jobs are well paid, jobs that are for less important reasons. We also spell colour and centre properly. πŸ™‚ Enjoy your trip!

I must say I feel blessed to live in Canada and very blessed to have universal health care. The only big complaint I have is the illegality of raw milk in Canada. There are very few cow shares spread over this large country and I do not live close to one. We do enjoy delicious raw milk cheese made close to home. Enjoy your stay in this beautiful land.

Happy and content on gorgeous Vancouver Island.

That’s great that you’re visiting up here! You have many fans up this way. We live in the Rockies and love it! I hope you have a wonderful holiday.

p.s. Hmmm, I think you guys spell “fibre” wrong. =)

    Hi Kimi,

I enjoy your blog, but I didn’t enjoy your health care dig. I live in the US, but come from a country with universal government health care (I’m from NZ). I disagree with the American system because I feel that healthcare is a basic human right that everyone should have affordable access to. It shouldn’t be in the control of profit making entities.

There’s a lot of things about America that I love and enjoy, but the healthcare system is not one of them πŸ™

    Regards
    Debbie

      Debbie,

It was a light hearted joke. Don’t take it too seriously. I have concerns with universal health care, but I wasn’t trying to make that an issue for discussion on this blog. πŸ™‚

I know of a few very good Mexican places in Toronto… lots of people in this city from there and also South America.. amongst other places. So lots of great multi cultural dining here! LOL… fibre! Yes, healthcare folks here are paid poorly for the most part. I know because I am one.. which is why I got out of the sickness industry and into the wellness industry when I found myself expecting.

Where are you exactly? I have never seen those highway signs! What DOES drive me nuts though are those little “baby on board” signs seen everywhere. Like I drive recklessly UNTIL and UNLESS I realize you have a child in your car. Not to mention they become deadly flying projectiles for said baby on board in case of accident.

I hear you Yarrow.. I am wracking my brain trying to figure how/where to get REAL milk in Quebec? On the upside backyard chickens are on the table for discussion at Toronto city council.

Oh my- long roadtrip with a little one! I don’t envy you.. hopefully she got to enjoy Victoria Day fireworks and you will have some next weekend for Memorial Day!

Sometimes I miss my home country also Naomi, originally from Ontario although moved around. We’ve visited Calgary area twice and sure wanted to go further west but never made it. Amazingly breath-taking country there. Sure is much different than Dallas/Forth Worth area. May you enjoy the cooler weather!

I live on Vancouver Island too! And like Yarrow I’m annoyed with the difficulty and legalities in obtaining raw milk. I wish it were easier to get raw dairy.
