Pennywise Platter Thursday 9/30

It’s time to share your frugal and nourishing tips and recipes! Where do you shop for quality food at a lower price? What recipe saves a penny? How do you balance a budget with nourishing food? Share here.

Please read through the three simple rules for those participating. This helps keep the quality of our carnival. Please read them through before linking and thanks again for your continued participation.


1) No linking to giveaways or promotions for affiliates or sponsors. One thing that I’ve noticed increasingly on Pennywise Platter is that I am getting more and more promotional pieces for affiliates or sponsors and a lot of giveaways. I’ve decided to keep Pennywise less “commercial” and more in tune with the spirit of the carnival by not allowing these links anymore. There was nothing wrong with those of you who linked to them, I just think that it will protect the integrity of our carnival better without them. Plus, it makes our links valuable in the future as well. A link to a giveaway three months old isn’t going to be worth browsing in three months time, but a link to a recipe for a frugal soup would be. I will be deleting any giveaway links or promotional links.

2) Keep the ingredients “nourishing”, such as whole grains, meats, vegetables, legumes, unrefined salt and sugars, chicken, etc. I am not going to be an ingredient police every week, but if there is a link to a post that is obviously not filling any of the criteria for healthy (for example, a white flour, white sugar birthday cake), I will delete that link.However, feel free to post vegetarian, vegan, raw, low-carb, etc.

3) Link back to the carnival This is common carnival courtesy. And more then that, it helps build the community of the carnival as you are sending your readers to others participating. And please, as a blogger, check out other’s posts and leave a comment! I know that we would all love to hear from each other.

    I linked up my recipe for making 100% whole wheat bagels (I used freshly ground wheat, but you can use store bought, too), adapted from one of Peter Reinhart’s recipes. They are wonderful! The grains are soaked the night before, and the texture of these bagels can’t be beat :)

    I use the Komo Fidibus Classic Mill and love it. Not only is it beautiful enough to keep on the counter, but it’s a workhorse… definitely a once-in-a-lifetime purchase. Kimi, are you still considering what kind of grain mill to buy? I meant to comment on that post, too, but it slipped away from me.

    Thanks for hosting the blog hop. This week I’m sharing my 100th Post celebratory dinner. It includes grass fed steak with leeks and mushrooms and a beet salad with yogurt dressing.

    Wow! So many amazing recipes! Seriously you all are amazing, how do you come up with such delicious, health recipes?!
    Okay, here’s my thing: if you’re interested in eating some dried cranberries without the added sugar you’re going to have to make your own. Naturally cranberries are very low in sugar, but this also means they are very tart, almost too tart for most people. Here are a few methods of drying cranberries. And by the way, now or when fresh cranberries are available, is the time to dry these little red berries.

    I accidently submitted twice! The first one had the wrong title, it should be my Pumpkin Pancakes. So sorry Kimi! Hopefully #29 can be deleted.

    This is about the easiest, cheapest way of using leftovers – at least for me! My sister in law can’t have gluten, and since a lot of canned chicken stock isn’t GF, we look at making everything from scratch. This was made from using scraps from cooking over a month’s time, and made quite a bit of chicken stock. It made a really good soup!

    I know there are millions of Stuffed Bell Pepper recipes out there, but here’s a healthy option! Enjoy. Also, I’ll be posting gluten-free additions in the future.

    I feel really stupid…How do I view any of the Pennywise Platter posts? And will somebody please explain to me what Mr. Linky is and how it works? I’ve heard about it on several blogs, but nowhere have I actually seen the widget or app or whatever it is.
