Pennywise Platter Thursday 9/23

It’s time to share your frugal and nourishing tips and recipes! Where do you shop for quality food at a lower price? What recipe saves a penny? How do you balance a budget with nourishing food? Share here.

Please read through the three simple rules for those participating. This helps keep the quality of our carnival. Please read them through before linking and thanks again for your continued participation.

1) No linking to giveaways or promotions for affiliates or sponsors. One thing that I’ve noticed increasingly on Pennywise Platter is that I am getting more and more promotional pieces for affiliates or sponsors and a lot of giveaways. I’ve decided to keep Pennywise less “commercial” and more in tune with the spirit of the carnival by not allowing these links anymore. There was nothing wrong with those of you who linked to them, I just think that it will protect the integrity of our carnival better without them. Plus, it makes our links valuable in the future as well. A link to a giveaway three months old isn’t going to be worth browsing in three months time, but a link to a recipe for a frugal soup would be. I will be deleting any giveaway links or promotional links.

2) Keep the ingredients “nourishing”, such as whole grains, meats, vegetables, legumes, unrefined salt and sugars, chicken, etc. I am not going to be an ingredient police every week, but if there is a link to a post that is obviously not filling any of the criteria for healthy (for example, a white flour, white sugar birthday cake), I will delete that link.However, feel free to post vegetarian, vegan, raw, low-carb, etc.

3) Link back to the carnival This is common carnival courtesy. And more then that, it helps build the community of the carnival as you are sending your readers to others participating. And please, as a blogger, check out other’s posts and leave a comment! I know that we would all love to hear from each other.

      Hey Wendy,

      Your tart looked beautiful, but you are right probably a bit high in the sugar realm. 😉 You know, I bet you could make it a bit more nourishing by substituting more natural sweeteners. When I made my own plum tart (galette) this week, I used rapadura and it came out great! Give it a try. You might be surprised. 🙂

    Hi Kimi! Thanks so much for hosting…it’s a great event and as others have said I look forward to this each week. I’ve got a simple technique for getting more flavor out of your peppers. I love using my roasted peppers in soups, sandwiches, antipasto platters, meat dishes, salads. It’s just a versatile way to enhance your dish.

    Thanks Kimi for hosting this great carnival. It’s my favorite on the web so far. This week I posted the most delicious raw pie I’ve ever made, pumpkin, just in time for autumn. Also, the hands-down single most delicious raw recipe of any kind I’ve ever had – Vanilla Cream. I’m drooling right now thinking about it.

    Hi, this is my first time! And it’s also the first recipe I have adapted to make it more nutritious. My recipe is healthier cinnamon rolls and a variation, chocolate/coconut rolls. Have 3 dozen cinnamon rolls to stick in the freezer! Lots of breakfasts and snacks on hand for not a lot of cash.

      I am sorry that the advertising offended you. I actually don’t “accept” any of the ads as they are put on automatically through google ads.

    Kimi, I really enjoy your weekly carnival and find a good bit of inspiration here, but since I don’t have a blog I do a whole lot more receiving than giving. But today I want to share a recipe because it is so seasonal (with apple season in full swing), cheap and GOOD!
    Apple Chicken Soft Tacos (don’t expect a Tex-Mex flavor):
    3 T butter
    1 medium thinly sliced onion
    2 medium thinly sliced apples (peel if you like)
    1/4 to 1/2 t salt
    1/4 t nutmeg
    1/4 t freshly ground pepper
    2 cloves minced garlic
    8 oz. cooked chicken, coarsely chopped
    6 flour tortillas (whatever you use)
    Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat, add onions, cook 5 minutes or until tender. Add apples, salt, nutmeg and pepper, cook until apples are soft and golden. Add garlic, stir, add chicken and continue cooking until chicken is heated through. Warm tortillas and place about one heaping half cup of filling in each tortilla, roll up and serve warm.
    We had these tonight with butternut squash fries and green beans. Lovely. 🙂
